New screenshots of the upcoming reboot of the turn-based strategy series mixes the familiar with some new visual elements.
As part of their ongoing coverage of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, GameInformer has a few screenshots from the game which gives the impression that Civilization developers Firaxis Games have been putting in some time to get the classic look and feel of the series down while at the same time, updating some elements so we're not simply playing the same strategy games from the mid-90's.
It is nice to see that they retained the top-down view for at least one aspect of the gameplay. In the original, portions of the battlefield would be blacked out until you marched your units over into them and that seems to be the case here. Back in the old games, this consistently created a feeling of tension as you waiting for something horrible to spring out of the darkness and kill your guys.
It also looks like research will be returning based on this screen of the engineering bay. In the earlier games, managing your tech trees usually meant the difference between the constant threat of annihilation and just worrying slightly less about the greys taking over the world.
The big change comes from the change in view during the actual combat, which draws on a third-person view as you can see above. While these sequences are still turn-based, you can presumably customize and deploy your soldier as you take out those menacing little aliens.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available sometime later this year.
