Boldly go... something, something... look, you can play it for free now.
I wonder if at this point we should simply start running posts about MMOs that aren't going free-to-play. As with DC Universe Online, Cryptic Studios' Star Trek Online is getting a tiered F2P model where Silver players will get access to the full suite of gamplay, while some advanced game features like creating a fleet guild and number of characters slots are beefier for the $14.99 a month subscribers. There's actually a handy matrix here that lays out how the two tiers work.
It's been almost a full year since the game released on the PC to generally mixed reviews, but the IP has probably helped keep it alive. Now the switch to F2P means Cryptic is going to have to figure out if they can become League f Legends or if they'll end up being Star Wars Galaxies.
You can download Star Trek Online on its site.
