Andriasang brings news of a precipitous drop in hardware sales as the new handheld falls behind both the 3DS and the PSP.
In its first week on Japanese shelves, the Playstation Vita had a respectable debut with 325,000 units sold at retail—not shabby at all with the 3DS still dominating the market because that's what Nintendo hardware does. In its second week, the PS Vita sold approximately 76,000 units, coming in fourth behind the 3DS, the PSP, and the Wii. That puts it behind one juggernaut and two systems that are all but dead consoles on the shelves are their respective manufactures move their focus to the next big iteration. By contrast, 3DS sales jumped over the previous week.
Andriasang also notes that not a single PS Vita title made it into the Top 20 for the December 19 through December 25th sales. Could this mean that Japanese gamers were turned off or simply disinterested in the system's launch lineup?
Whatever the cause, Sony must certainly be reconsidering how they're positioning the console to Japanese gamers and I have to imagine there might be a little bit of gnashing of teeth about how they'll approach the launch here in the U.S. and Canada come February.
