A class-based, 3v3 2D arena shooter? Color me intrigued, Ronimo games.
It's like Team Fortress 2 meets Metal Slug and if that combination of words doesn't at least get you to check out the gameplay trailer from developer Ronimo's 2D multiplayer shooter, then I just don't know how to lure you in with my words. Without having played the game at all—this trailer is actually the first real notice I've had a chance to give it—I can at least say that Ronimo has found what sounds like a clever way of mixing and matching existing elements into something new. The stylized look of the game is appealing enough (if a little busy with all of the elements onscreen) and 3v3 multiplayer might be the perfect number for the kind of game they're making which avoids an excess of characters in the environment while still giving you the feeling that you're playing with a team.
While an FAQ on the game's site lists a late 2011 release window, the latest press release shifts the date to sometime in February on XBLA and PSN.
Here's how the developer describes the game:
The year is 3587, conflict spans the stars. Huge robot armies are locked in an enduring stalemate. At the centre is a team of elite mercenaries fighting for the spoils of war: The Awesomenauts.
Combining the gameplay of classic 2D-platforming titles with that of modern, fast-paced MOBA-games, Awesomenauts allows up to six players to battle against one-another across multiple alien worlds. Featuring a playable roster of six unique heroes, Awesomenauts brings ferocious team play and angry, lightsaber-wielding aliens together.
Awesomenauts will be available for download on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network in February 2012.
