Not at all a bad launch for Sony's newest foray into handlheld gaming.
The exact number, as Famitsu is reporting, is 321,407 units sold. And that "first week" actually only encompassed two days, December 17th and 18th. By contrast, when the original PSP launched seven years ago, Sony picked up 166,000 new users in the first day, and the Vita's release numbers aren't too far off from the 3DS' debut at 371,000 units back in February. Meaning Sony can pat themselves on the back for getting the Vita out there and Japanese gamers interested at launch.
Andriasang reports that Famitsu didn't provide sell-through percentage numbers, meaning we don't know exactly how many officially shipped, but Sony has said that they planned to get 500,000 of the 3G/Wi-fi model out in the wild.
This initial victory for the Vita shouldn't be overlooked: yeah, the economy is starting to look up but it's still not quite in tip-top shape, particularly in Japan. The 3DS likewise had some nice numbers but kind of limped along immediately after launch until Nintendo allowed a price drop for their latest handheld.
The PS Vita will be available here in the U.S. on February 15th.
