I didn't know I wanted a follow-up to Space Channel 5 so badly until I saw the trailer for Sega's upcoming story-based rhythm game.
If you don't mind my getting nostalgic here for a minute, I used to love some of the more out there story-based rhythm games on previous consoles like the aforementioned Space Channel 5 (and its followup), Parappa the Rapper, and more recently Elite Beat Agents. Admittedly, they're very repetitive experiences good for one or two go-rounds if you're the type looking to perfect your score, but there was something deeply rewarding about the "Simon"-like gameplay and usually gonzo, hyper-color stories.
So you can imagine I'm kind of excited about the upcoming Sega title, Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure, which is getting a full reveal in this month's Nintendo Power magazine. While you can get a feel for the gameplay and look of the game, the NP feature is supposed to provide more detail about what to expect.
Here's the official synopsis:
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure sees players enter the secret life of Raphael, infamous among Parisians as an honorable thief for stealing famous works of art, only to return it days later. Dive into Raphael’s world and help him find the Wristlet of Tiamat to unmask the mystery behind his father’s disappearance. While unraveling the truth, players will encounter an assortment of different rhythm challenges to master. Tap the screen, swipe the stylus and control the gyro to the beat of the music to maneuver Raphael through the unique streets of Paris, brought to life by stylish animations and vibrant 3D maps and landscapes.
Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure offers a unique enjoyable single player experience, as well as toe-tapping multiplayer and uses StreetPass. Unearth the clues hidden behind treasures scattered around Paris, call on your sense of rhythm and use all your puzzle solving skills to help Raphael get to the bottom of the mystery.
Rhythm Thief & The Emperor's Treasure has a February 28th release date for the U.S. on the 3DS.
