Lots of games ship with defects. It's unfortunate, but we've all grown perhaps a bit too accustomed – particularly on PC titles – to downloading patches shortly after a game's release. It's one thing to discover a bunch of annoying bugs and glitches in your newly purchased game, but what if the game you downloaded doesn't even seem like the finished version at all? That's precisely what some "Dead Island" players are experiencing right now.
According to Kotaku, those who have downloaded the new zombie-splattering title "Dead Island" from Steam may have noticed that something was a bit – weird. Players are able to clip through walls with the mere press of a button, and the whole game is behaving a little wonky.
This is more than just release-day bugs, though. Looking at the code, it seems as though Deep Silver have actually placed a non-retail version of the game for download on Steam. That's more than just a little oversight – this could, in fact, be the entirely wrong version of "Dead Island." Maybe you're playing a debug copy, or maybe it's just an early copy. We're not sure yet.
Kotaku's Mike Fahey posted a video that shows off the issues far better than I can elaborate upon. There's even a bizarre third-person mode. So strange.
Deep Silver has told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that the full version of the game should update on Steam later today. In the meantime, feel free to play this alternate version, warping through walls and zombies at your leisure. If that's not your thing, you can always check out our preview footage -- no clipping!
