Fallout 3

Seems that after two and a half years, my time as the editor of MTV Multiplayer has come to a close. It has been a privilege to attempt to give you some insight into the world of video games and technology. Whether you came to the blog every day, every week, or just whenever it popped up on Twitter, I hope you enjoyed your time here. I certainly have.

There have been several regular contributors throughout my time here at Multiplayer, and they have my utmost admiration. These are gentleman who deserve considerably more than a mention in a farewell blog post but, for now, this will have to do: Jason Cipriano, Matt Clark, Brian Warmoth, Brad Nicholson, Nick Akerman, and Adam Rosenberg.

I'd also like to thank Stephen Totilo, Tracey John and Patrick Klepek for building such an incredible audience. It was a true honor and a monumental task to fill those shoes.

As for me, you can still follow my ramblings on Twitter (@RussFrushtick).

Since I'm terrible at goodbyes, let me just leave you with an epic fishing battle between me and Sway. (Actually, I'll save you some time. I totally won.)

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2

For the last 25 years, the "Dragon Quest" franchise has been polarizing gamers; it's a series that you either love or hate. The classic gameplay may feel slow and dated to gamers that are used to more fast-paced action-RPGs, but "DQ" has one of the most rabid and insatiable fan bases in video game history. Those followers love "Dragon Quest" so much that the series has spawned numerous spin-offs, most of which don’t stray too far from the turn-based gameplay that conjures up nostalgia in its fans. The latest spin-off is actually part of a franchise now unto itself, "Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2" mixes classic "Quest" RPG style with modern day monster collecting, ala Pokémon.

This fall, two military-shooter juggernauts will face off for your – or your awesome grandma's – holiday dollars. Both Activision's "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" and EA's "Battlefield 3" are worthy contenders, but in the end, one title will likely draw the most sales. Fans of the genre are well aware that Microsoft have paid, we assume, quite handsomely for the right to timed exclusives in regards to ever-popular "Call of Duty" downloadable-content. PlayStation 3 and PC players have waited a month longer to receive the same map packs.

Well, EA is looking to stake their own console exclusivity claim, thanks to a deal with Sony. "Battlefield 3" downloadable-content will come to the PlayStation 3 one week before other platforms.

The Joker may not be the main bad guy of "Batman: Arkham City," (that honor goes to Professor Hugo Strange), but he does play a pretty crucial role in the game, now that he's running around loose in the streets of Gotham City. We secured this trailer, which focuses on some of the Joker's crew, while also giving some of his backstory.

Do you know what studio you should not mess with? "Dark Souls" developer From Software. Those guys will hunt your scrawny hind-end down and beat you mercilessly with a virtual rubber hose. They're like the Charles Bronson of game studios, and when they're mustache begins to twitch, it is fully on.

Apparently, Japanese retail copies of "Dark Souls" got out a couple days too early, and the company has entered these poor schmucks game worlds, absolutely obliterating them.

Notch and company at Mojang may have just released the 1.8 beta version of "Minecraft," but that doesn't mean they're taking some time off. No, instead, they're already hard at work on version 1.9, which features further "adventure" elements, as well as the usual tweaks. Even better, the game is getting a brand new mob, but this time around, they're not an enemy. You're getting a new frosty friend!

Burnout Crash

Reinventing a franchise can be tricky business. Sometimes it's better to just reinvent part of a franchise, taking an element that fans enjoyed and twisting it on its ear a bit. "Burnout Crash" accomplishes this by focusing on just one mode from the "Burnout" franchise, Crash mode, and coming at it from a brand new angle. Specifically a top-down one.

"Battlefield 3" hits shelves – or your handy Origin client – in just a little over a month, with a public beta starting on September 29. If you pre-ordered through the Origin service or trudged your way through a pre-ordered "Medal Of Honor," you should have special early access on September 27. Diablo 3

Despite the fact that Blizzard has shown "Diablo 3" to press plenty of times, last night was the first time I was able to sit down and play it. Yes, after getting word that I had access to the beta, quickly dashed to my computer, thrilled about playing the game I had been waiting 10 years for. Fair warning: This is a very different "Diablo."

UPDATE: According to a post on the "Diablo 3" forums, beta invites will roll out in waves "as needed." Basically, that means Blizzard will let more people in as they're certain the game's infrastructure can handle the load. When the dev team does send out invites, they'll go out between 9a.m. and 6p.m. PST, Monday through Friday. No need to stare at your inbox outside those times!

ORIGINAL STORY: Word on the street is that "Diablo 3" closed beta invites have just started going out. Time to start incessantly checking your inbox. Everyone – well, "Diablo" fans, that is – have been anxiously awaiting for that magical invite in the mail. Starting today, it just might show up; or it won't, which will likely send you into some type of frenzied nerd-rage.
