Team Fortress 2

The cross-over has long been a staple of prime time TV programming. The Jetsons went back in time to visit The Flintstones, Jay Sherman came to Springfield for a film festival and there was probably some episode where "Gray's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" came together that I never saw. Cross-overs in video games are more rare, usually just existing in two games from the same company. Valve has done this a bunch with Black Mesa references in "Portal," but they're also willing to bring other companies into the fold, thanks to "Team Fortress 2." The game's many updates have added items from games like "Skyrim" and "Monday Night Combat."

The latest non-Valve cross-over is promoting "Deus Ex: Human Revolution," which releases next week. The update adds eight new items, including some new guns and cosmetic options. Diligent "TF2" fans can access these guns for free through standard drops and trading, but the less patient can pre-order "Deus Ex" on Steam for instant access to them.

Portal 2

If it seems like months ago Valve promised the world that free "Portal 2" DLC was coming this summer, that's because it was. Yes, it was back in April when Valve sent word of the first "Portal 2" DLC pack, but since then we haven't heard a peep. Meanwhile, summer is dwindling and memories of P-Body and Atlas are slowly fading into obscurity. Is "Portal 2" DLC going the way of "Half-Life 3: Episode 3"? Not hardly! Valve is pegging the release for mid-September.

Playing a "Serious Sam" game felt a little weird at first. The franchise has always found its comparisons to "Duke Nukem," and after that series' fall from grace earlier this year, the prospect of playing another testosterone-fueled, retro shooter sounded less than appealing. Still, where Duke has long felt the need to accentuate the action with nearly grotesque misogyny, Sam has always just been about one thing: having a blast killing an insane amount of aliens.

After spending some time with a preview build of "Serious Sam 3: BFE," I can tell you that while Sam is still seriously the same, he's also still seriously fun.

I was pretty sure I knew what to expect from "Dead Island." Generally a pretty, pre-rendered cutscene like the one that kicked off the firestorm of media interest, usually means that the actual game is A) ugly and B) not very good. I'm happy to report that neither is the case with "Dead Island," a game which takes the very best elements of "Borderlands" and "Oblivion" and mashes them up with extreme, undead carnage. Last week we played through the first 20 minutes of the game, but the great thing about "Dead Island" is the level of freedom you're given. Case in point, here's the first 20 minutes (minus the linear prologue), played very differently. Yes, this is what you should be watching while eating lunch at your desk.

Elevator Action Deluxe

I remember really being amazed by "Elevator Action" when I first played it on the NES. The elevators! The action! The...both of those things together! Actually I was just amazed that it was so open and you had so much freedom of movement. That was then. I recently replayed it and, I'm sad to say, it hasn't aged well. Maybe it's the prevelance of slow-moving elevators in video games these days, but my patience has officially run out. Not to mention the fact that, if you weren't perfectly lined up with a floor, your super spy was physically incapable of stepping up the six inches, thereby saving his life from a rogue, slow-moving bullet. Ok, bitterness over with. Square's bringing "Elevator Action" back on August 31, with "Elevator Action Deluxe," coming exclusively to PSN.

RAGE

"Liking" something on Facebook generally doesn't do much more than inform your friends that you're really into "Rainbow Brite." But, occasionally, "liking" something actually makes a difference. In the case of "Mass Effect 3," the design for the female version of Commander Sheppard that would grace the cover was decided via votes on Facebook. (In fact, they're now voting on what her hair color should be. Seriously.) Sure, it was an effective marketing campaign, but what do the fans really get out of it in the long run? Well, in the case of "RAGE," fans will get a free game out of it.

A couple years ago, Infinity Ward made the – some would say crappy – decision to release the PC version of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" without access to dedicated servers. There was quite the expected revolt from the PC gaming community, leading to petitions being signed and a bit of a rift between the developer and the PC community. That animosity has remained present, but it looks like Infinity Ward have actually listened to the complaints.

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" is launching with dedicated servers, "day one."

Diablo 3

There's a reason "Diablo 2" stuck around for as long as it did. The core game might've only taken a dozen hours to complete, but it encouraged constant replays with progressively higher difficulty levels which had better loot drops and offered more of a challenge to skilled players. You started off with Normal, moved on to Nightmare and wrapped things up with Hell. Once you got to the end of Hell, the loot was as good as it could possibly be, so people would constantly run the same quests over and over again to try and score the best gear. These became known as Baal Runs, as they culminated with a battle against the final boss of the "Diablo 2" expansion pack, Baal.

Blizzard doesn't want the same thing to happen with "Diablo 3." Outside of a dedicated group of players, most people find running the same quest dozens of times no fun at all. An an attempt to mix things up, Kotaku is reporting that the developers have introduced Inferno mode, which sits on top of even Hell.

It's always exciting when a new "World of Warcraft" expansion launches, and "Cataclysm" was no exception. That night, the city centers were crammed full of players, waiting and hoping that something insane was going to happen when Deathwing was unleashed upon the world of Azeroth. Well, in truth, the lead-up to "Cataclysm" may have been more exciting than the full launch, but the evolution of the story in "World of Warcraft" still keeps you coming back for more.

It's not an announcement of a full expansion yet, but it looks like the 4.3 patch is the end of the "Cataclysm" story arc.
