Many moons ago, I became very excited with the prospect of playing an online massively-multiplayer game. This wasn't some cliché romp through a fantasy role-playing world – no, this was a cliché romp through the word of "Star Wars." I happily plunked down a large sum of cash for a limited edition box – which I still have, for some reason – thinking that "Star Wars Galaxies" would be the first time I ever fell in love with this new MMO genre. Well, I did fall in love, for a few months, then I quickly fell out of love with a game that was, at best, boring as dirt.
As it turns out, people are actually still playing "Star Wars Galaxies," but their days are numbered. Sony Online Entertainment is about to drive the last nail in the coffin, but they're going out with a bang.
Now, I'm not trying to slight the "Galaxies" community. It takes sincere dedication to remain loyal to a troubled game universe, and it must royally suck to see something you've invested so much of your life into coming to an end. At the same time, "Galaxies" really never was that great of a game, and I can't say I'll shed any tears when the plug is pulled on December 15.
According to a post on the game's forums, though, the community will have one last hurrah before meeting the big carbonite sleep. SOE is planning a series of in-game events to celebrate the end of the game, which will hopefully help those affected have some type of closure. The outcome of said battles and events will determine the game's end: the conclusion of the galactic civil war. Heavy stuff.
If you're wanting to take part in the game's big sendoff, you'll need to have an active account as of September 15. I suppose it's even possible to join in for the last few months, assuming you pay for thirty days of gameplay that's current on September 15. Hell, if they kept old characters reserved, maybe I'll even bring out my mullet-sporting badass, Motta Boze.
Probably not.
