At last count, I believe there are about 800 supervillains lined-up for "Batman: Arkham City." OK, maybe there's not that many, but it seems like we're seeing new footage of a different Gotham ne'er-do-well every couple of weeks. Not that I'm complaining; Rocksteady has consistently impressed the hell out of me with each character reveal. Today's trailer is no exception, as Rocksteady shows off a particularly excellent looking Mr. Freeze.
Check out the trailer right after the jump.
Mr. Freeze is actually a great character, too often associated by the non-geek public with his ridiculous, "punny" portrayal in "Batman and Robin" by Arnold Schwarzenegger. There have been different variations on the villain over the years, going all the way back to the '60s television series, but it was actually "Batman: The Animated Series" that has guided Dr. Victor Fries' origin story since the '90s.
He's a bit of a tragic case, becoming obsessed with cryogenics in a desperate attempt to save his ill wife, Nora. Obviously, Rocksteady is sticking close to the canon, as Mr. Freeze can be heard in the trailer commanding to Batman to "bring [him] Nora." The doctor's look – including that spectacular suit – definitely harken back to the animated television show, right down to Freeze's thin appearance. I never did understand the decision to cast a muscle-bound Schwarzenegger in the film. As usual, Rocksteady is on their game.
It's not immediately clear how big of a role Freeze will play in "Arkham City," but we can definitely surmise that we'll spend some time in the doctor's lab. Based on the gameplay in the trailer, I smell boss fight.
October 18 can't get here quick enough.
