'Borderlands 2' Officially Announced, Appearing At PAX Prime

"Borderlands" exemplifies one of those all too rare moments in gaming today where an entirely new property can come out of nowhere and turn into a smash hit. The role-playing shooter ran away with numerous awards after its release, and maintained a strong presence thanks to a considerable amount of downloadable-content packs. Now that the final DLC has since passed, plenty of fans have anxiously awaited the announcement of an obligatory sequel. Well, that day is today.

2K Games officially announced – there has been mounting speculation – this morning that "Borderlands 2" will release sometime after the company's 2013 fiscal year. Basically, that means sometime after April 1, 2012. There's obviously only minor details at this point, but 2K did reveal that the game will feature "all-new characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment, which come together in an ambitiously crafted story." Story didn't come across to me as a major strong-point in the original "Borderlands", but here's hoping there's more depth this go around.

If you just can't wait until "sometime" in 2012 to check out "Borderlands 2," the game will make its way around the convention circuit this year. The first stop, and it appears the first major presentation of the game, will take place during GamesCom in Cologne, Germany later this month. Now if you don't have the scratch to make it over to Germany, don't get your lederhosen in a bunch – "Borderlands 2" is also scheduled to make an appearance at PAX Prime in Seattle, August 26-28.

"Borderlands 2" also graces the cover of this month's Game Informer magazine.
