Burnout Crash

Just because the holiday season is painfully full of major retail releases doesn't mean the downloadable space will be empty. There are definitely a few titles that have the potential to fill out both XBLA and PSN for the better. One of those titles is "Burnout Crash," a game I played a month or so ago and really enjoyed. Sure, it's not the full "Burnout" sequel that we've all been waiting for since "Paradise," but it does do a pretty good job of scratching that itch. Fans of the Crash mode from "Takedown" will definitely get a kick out of it, and the art style has a pleasant smattering of "Rampage" thrown in for good measure.

Anyway, I'm happy to report that the game is going to release on September 20 for both PSN and XBLA. Even better, it'll come in at a lower-than-expected $10. Based on what sort of content they're offering, I would've expected $15 at least. Good news all around!

"Call of Duty XP" kicks off this weekend, but details on the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" Hardened edition may have just leaked out. An anonymous source has provided a photo to Wired of an unreleased advertisement for the premium package, and for all intents and purposes, the thing looks legit. The Hardened edition will apparently contain a steel case, as well as one extremely nice digital goodie.

Top Gear Halo Warthog

It's hard to imagine a more clever cross-promotional effort between "Halo 4," a hugely-anticipated shooter coming out next year, and "Forza Motorsport 4," an ultra-realistic racer coming out this year. The games are, after all, completely different. And yet, Microsoft found a way, as we saw last week with the footage of the "Halo 4" Warthog making it into "Forza 4." Further expanding on the concept, Turn 10 enlisted the help of Jeremy Clarkson, one of the hosts of "Top Gear," to give users a better sense of what the Warthog is packing.

A big part of "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" is hacking through computer systems, extruding information and shutting down security systems. So, if Eidos Montreal were to release some new content, whatever that may be, wouldn't it be cool if the entire process turned into a bit of a game, offering up codes for fans to decipher. Well, that's precisely what they've done, and looks like we could hear about "Human Revolution" downloadable-content soon.

A couple weeks ago in Cologne, Germany, EA and DICE showed off a few minutes of co-op mode in "Battlefield 3." The "Exfiltration" mission had the two-player team escorting a political defector out of hostile territory, and while it didn't appear to reinvent the wheel, the mode certainly looks like a lot of fun. Writing on the PlayStation Blog this morning, DICE junior product manager Tommy Rydling shared a few more details on what to expect in October.

Jetpack Joyride

A few months ago, I attempted to share with you the joys of a game called "Machine Gun Jetpack." Since then the game, created by Halfbrick Studios (of "Fruit Ninja" fame) went through a name change and is now known as "Jetpack Joyride." The title's been in development for about 9 months now and, depending on where you live in the world, you may be able to download it right now.

"Super Mario Bros." clone games, like browser-based Flash titles that try to lure you into clicking on some crappy ad, are a dime-a-dozen. As one of the most iconic – or arguably the most iconic – characters in gaming history, Mario often finds himself at the center of parodies and knockoffs. That said, new indie effort "Mari0" is one of the absolute coolest to pop up.

The Haunted

When "Resident Evil" introduced "The Mercenaries" bonus game in "Resident Evil 4," everyone was pretty thrilled about it. It's inclusion in "RE 5" was also appreciated. But, when it came to releasing "The Mercenaries" as a stand-alone, full-priced title on the Nintendo 3DS, it didn't really work. There just wasn't enough there to justify $40 price point. At a more reasonable, budget price, however, I think the concept could be a real success. That's where "The Haunted: Hell's Reach" comes in.

Many moons ago, I became very excited with the prospect of playing an online massively-multiplayer game. This wasn't some cliché romp through a fantasy role-playing world – no, this was a cliché romp through the word of "Star Wars." I happily plunked down a large sum of cash for a limited edition box – which I still have, for some reason – thinking that "Star Wars Galaxies" would be the first time I ever fell in love with this new MMO genre. Well, I did fall in love, for a few months, then I quickly fell out of love with a game that was, at best, boring as dirt.

As it turns out, people are actually still playing "Star Wars Galaxies," but their days are numbered. Sony Online Entertainment is about to drive the last nail in the coffin, but they're going out with a bang.

Super Crate Box

Indie developer Vlambeer saw the dark side of iOS development when it was scooped to the platform by a team that cloned "Radical Fishing" and stuck a ninja in it. The fury over that cloning has since died down, and Vlambeer is moving on by re-releasing another one of its most popular games, "Super Crate Box," on the App Store.
