"The Blocks Cometh" was one of my most anticipated iOS games of last year, but when it finally launched, there was definitely a lot of work still to do. Control issues plagued the game, but, more importantly, it was extremely difficult to play when holding an iPhone in the vertical position. After a minor bug fix, the developers haven't updated "The Blocks Cometh" in months, but that changed today with a massive upgrade that makes the game infinitely more playable.
The update, which is free to those who already purchased the game, adds a host of new features. In addition to the standard Classic mode, a Casual mode has been added which dials down the difficulty considerably. There's also an Arcade mode which gives players three lives instead of just one. The last new mode is called Gamebot and it's only available as an in-app purchase for 99 cents. It's basically a re-imaging of "The Blocks Cometh" if the game originally released on the Game Boy. As it happens, it's my favorite mode of the bunch, with tighter, more responsive controls and a faster learning curve.
Along with the new modes are four new playable characters, which brings the roster to 9. But that's not the best part of the update. Landscape mode has finally been implemented, so you can play "The Blocks Cometh" in a much more comfortable horizontal position. It's remarkable what a difference it makes, as I was able to crush my previous high score on my first try, thanks to the lack of hand cramping.
So, if you were like me and somewhat disappointed with the initial release of the game, you should really consider re-installing it with this update. For those new to "The Blocks Cometh," it's just a dollar in the app store, so if you're looking for something to pull you away from "Tiny Tower," this might just be it.
