The development of "Super Meat Boy," the massively successful indie platformer, stretched for a solid 18 months. Anyone intimately familiar with game development knows that not every idea will make it into the final product, and the guys at Team Meat have decided to reveal some of the features and characters that didn't make the cut in a new blog post.

So, I wrote earlier today that Valve is making an appearance at GamesCom in August, after missing E3 this year. While we don't know exactly what title(s) the company is showing in Germany, there's a good chance that the upcoming – this summer, apparently – "Portal 2" downloadable-content will take center stage. We've previously reported that the download will feature new test chambers and leaderboards, but there's actually another downloadable-content pack now available to PC gamers – if you've spent $140 on a new controller, that is.

After 15 very long years in development, the seemingly never-ending saga that was the development of "Duke Nukem Forever" has finally come to an end, culminating in the first all-new release from one the earliest icons of first-person shooter since 1996. "DNF" includes the same over the top action, humor, and titular character that fans of the series have come to expect, sufficed to say, the King is back, but is he better than ever?

iD Software is undoubtedly a company important to first-person shooter enthusiasts. When the developer released "Doom" in 1993, it was the beginning of a new era in gaming. Sure, it also started the dreaded "video game violence will rot the minds of out children" debate, but it's hard to argue that gaming isn't still taking cues from the seminal title. Just three years later, iD would release "Quake," and the first-person shooter genre was not only in 3D, it was possible to play against friends online. Today, online shooters are everywhere – just take a look at this year's E3 line-up – but it's getting harder and harder to remember the way things were 15 years ago.
The game has changed, but iD's John Carmack is looking to the past for a new "Quake."

I was bummed out when Valve didn't make an appearance at E3 this year. Sure, there was still some chance of a surprise visit by Gabe Newell, but as it turned out, the "Half-Life" developer just didn't show up at all. Like many of you, I feel like I've been waiting on "Half-Life 3," or Episode 3, or whatever, for a ridiculous amount of time. Well, it looks like Valve is actually coming to GamesCom in Cologne, Germany this August, but I still doubt you're going to see anything about Gordon Freeman's next adventure.

The "Iwata Asks" interview series has Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata discussing game development with some of the team members behind the company's biggest hits. This week's entry is particularly fascinating, as it brings together members from the original "Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" development team to share some interesting tidbits about the game's creation. For example, did you know Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of "Zelda," wanted to make the N64 installment an FPS?

Every once in a while, a game comes around that raises our expectations of every game after that. It's like someone flips a light switch and suddenly we realize everything we've been missing. "The Legend of Zeda: Ocarina of Time" was one of those games that took the medium to the next level, and it remains one of the greatest titles ever made. When it comes to remaking such an impactful game, you really don't want to screw it up. Thankfully, Nintendo didn't.

Have you grabbed your Rockstar Pass for "L.A. Noire," yet? If you've yet to get on-board with the game's all-for-one downloadable-content plan, you'll have to pay á la carte for each of the upcoming new cases. Next up on Cole Phelps' docket is the previously announced "Nicholson Electroplating" arson case. We still know only a few facts about the crime – although, really, you wouldn't want to know too much – but Rockstar released a new trailer today that at the very least, sheds a little light on the explosive caper.
Check out the trailer right after the jump.

The internet brouhaha'd a few days ago and, in a rare event, I actually agreed with the brouhahaers. The short story is that EA started promoting a pre-order incentive which would unlock certain weapons and equipment for those who put down early money for "Battlefield 3." The weapons and equipment were labeled as "exclusive," so those who didn't bother pre-ordering wouldn't get access to them. The issue with this is that it create an uneven playing field between those who pre-ordered and those who didn't, and in a multiplayer game, an uneven playing field is a very bad thing. Seems that DICE heard the complaints loud and clear and has reacted accordingly.

The Xbox Live Indie Games market is a great place to discover smaller titles you might have otherwise overlooked. Of course, it's also filled to the brim with crappy shlock like games featuring gratuitous shots of women in bikinis and "massage" games that I'm fairly certain are not intended to soothe your aching back. So, the community took it upon itself last year to start the Xbox Live Indie Games Winter Uprising. The event was an excellent way to showcase some of the better titles on the marketplace, and for all intents and purposes, seemed like a great success.
Well, the Uprising is coming back this summer with the Xbox Live Indie Games Summer Uprising.
