Recently, "Minecraft" creator Notch mentioned what the development team was planning for the 1.7 version update. Beyond the usual bug fixes, the update was set to include pistons and some type of brand new "adventure" game type. There wasn't a whole lot of detail on how exactly adventure would be worked into "Minecraft," but as a fan of the game, I was definitely excited to check out some new stuff. Well, we're still getting the pistons in 1.7, but the adventure elements have been pushed back to the next update.

Tiny Tower

Last week saw the release of "Tiny Tower," a free iOS game which tasks people to build an economically-booming skyscraper. For full impressions on the game, you can check out our first look here, but if you've already made the plunge, you may be a little bit overwhelmed. Don't worry, I'm here to help. Here are some starting tips to help you get from your first floor to your twentieth in as little time as possible.

Supreme Court

In what was very likely the most impactful legal decision ever to face the video game media, the US Supreme Court struck down a California law which attempted to make it illegal for retailers to sell ultra-violent video games to minors. The law was created by the California state government and Leland Yee, a child psychologist, with the undermining principle that exposing minors to video games would cause metal harm. The Supreme Court, in a 7 to 2 ruling, determined that the law "does not comport with the First Amendment," and that "Video games qualify for First Amendment protection."

We found out last month that "Battlefield 3" was coming equipped with campaign cooperative play. It's an exciting feature, and an interesting move by DICE, as the campaigns in previous "Battlefield" games have always felt a bit...well, a bit like a secondary thought. The impetus in those games has always centered on multiplayer, and acting as though a campaign plays a vital role – let alone adding what sounds like story-driven co-op – is kind of a big deal.

Gears of War 3

Epic has already said that players will be able to unlock certain pieces of content in "Gears of War 3" by completing objectives in the previous "Gears" games. They haven't, however, been very specific about what objectives people will need to complete and what the rewards will be. Rod Fergusson, the executive producer of "Gears of War 3," was recently in New York to show off the game, and was happy to reveal some of those unlocks for me.

Supreme Court

You may recall that back in November of 2010, a case came before the US Supreme Court regarding video games. The case was focused on a law, proposed by the government of California, which would make it illegal for stores to sell certain types of games to minors. The crux of the argument for the law centered around the theoretical damage caused by children playing violent video games. On the other side of the argument was the EMA, which claimed that any restriction on what stores could sell to whom based on content would be a violation of the first amendment.

The saying goes that you shouldn't wish your life away. Well, screw that, because I wish 2012 would just hurry up and get here already. "BioShock Infinite" is just one of those games that the more you see of it, the more you just want to hand over all of this ridiculous earth-currency and spend the weekend cruising around Columbia on a sky-hook. Sadly, we still have to wait awhile before "Infinite" is released, but at least we can keep ourselves occupied with the occasional new video.

It seems like everything is going free-to-play these days. Earlier this week, Valve hinted that they were working on a free-to-play title, and I was convinced it was "Defense of the Ancients 2." While I'm still not ruling that game out as "freemium," it looks like Valve had something else up their sleeve all along. The developer had already announced a free week, allowing everyone to check out "Team Fortress 2." Now, the company has announced that the team-based shooter will stay free, forever.

Brink

I'll admit it: "Brink" was a pretty serious disappointment for me. I had seen the game at various preview events and found it a blast to play, with interesting gameplay mechanics and cool customization features. But that's the problem with preview events: playing over a LAN is very different from playing over the internet, and when "Brink" hopped online at launch, it was nothing short of a mess. Since then the developers have taken steps to improve performance, including capping the number of players in a standard multiplayer game, but it's hard to imagine that the game will ever recover from the hit it took in that first week. Which isn't to say it's not trying.

Rainbow Six

Dear game publishers: You may want to work on your security protocols. Details on yet another major release have been leaked, and while it's not quite as big as the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" debacle, it's still noteworthy. A source passed along information and screenshots for Ubisoft's next "Rainbow Six" game to Kotaku, and it seems there's a big focus on morality this time around.
