There have been a number of "Star Trek" games over the years, with varying degrees of success. For every decent "Elite Force," there was a middling "Away Team." Surprisingly, throughout all of those games, there's never actually been a "Star Trek" game that let players take control of the franchise's two most recognizable characters: Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. (Update: Actually this is dead wrong. Slash fiction aficionados, start revving those engines! Digital Extremes and Paramount are working on a new shooter which will let players team up as the world-saving duo in next summer's aptly-named "Star Trek."
At present, details of the game are pretty vague, apart from the fact that it'll be set in the J.J. Abrams -envisioned "Star Trek" universe, though it won't follow the events of the 2012 movie. According to the announcement, the game "boasts a stand alone story filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock must work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy." Fingers crossed for some Klingon blastin'!
Worth noting that the screenshot at the top of this post includes something brand new to the "Star Trek" universe. According to Jordan Hoffman of UGO.com, the Trekiest Trekkie I know, "that double phaser Spock is holding is 100% non-canonical. Never in anywhere in Trek have we ever seen a double phaser!" Glad to see the nerds are already beginning to rage over this one.
Really I'm just curious whether Digital Extremes can pull off an action-heavy "Trek" game. It's no easy task, given that the weapons of the universe aren't traditionally very satisfying or powerful. Unless they find a way to sneak the Gorn cannon in somehow. In which case, I'm totally sold.
