Sad news this week as folks got their last licks of the "Gears of War 3" beta, which came to a close. For those who played, it was an exceptionally content-filled beta, with 4 playable maps, unlockable characters, weapon skins, executions and medals. According to Microsoft, 11 million matches were played, over 249 years of cumulative playing time and about a third of the 1.29 million players unlocked Cole's Thrashball skin. But now it's gone. Here are some games to filled the void.

"Monster Hunter" is one of those strange franchises where, despite having an Everest-esque learning curve and remarkably unintuitive controls, a massive fanbase has developed. And while most of that fanbase exists in Japan, there are definitely "Monster Hunter" aficionados scattered across the globe. As the PSP has waned in popularity, those fans have likely been hoping for an alternative portable version of their favorite time sink, and it seems that Capcom has been listening. "Monster Hunter Dynamic Hunting" has been revealed for iOS, coming to Japan's App Store in June.

UPDATE: Major Nelson has just posted on his blog that the disc read error is not related to the upcoming firmware update, as reported. Apparently, this was caused by a previous update.
"Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly," Hryb wrote. "The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues."
That's good news, although I'm still a bit confused as to how an old update has caused this new problem.
ORIGINAL STORY: Back in March, Major Nelson announced via his blog that Microsoft was preparing to start another Xbox 360 Update Preview Program. Essentially, a number of Xbox users would have the chance to check out the upcoming firmware before everyone else, and in return, participants in this particular round were shipped a free copy of "Halo: Reach." Hyrb had mentioned that this test was going to "help [Microsoft] prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format."
Now, Microsoft has issued emails to some users claiming that the upcoming firmware may actually brick their Xbox 360.

"CivWorld" is the latest installment to the long-running, turn-based civilization-building game. Unlike previous installments, "World" can be played for free over Facebook, but the fact that it shares its home with "Farmville" doesn't mean it's just for casual players. In fact, after spending about 5 hours with the game, I'm still scratching my head over some of the features. It's a doozie of a Facebook game, which means you'll probably need a little guidance to ease you into its deep waters, and Firaxis is more than happy to oblige with a video guide walking you through some of the basics.

UPDATE: Sony's senior corporate communications director, Patrick Seybold, has commented on the exploit issue via the PlayStation Blog.
"We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed," Seybold writes. "Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up."
So, no "hack," but there was an exploit; seems like a matter of semantics to me. As of this writing, the web-based network login is still "down for maintenance."
ORIGINAL STORY: Well, it looks like the hackers are not quite done with Sony, just yet. Sign-in capabilities on PlayStation websites has been disabled, and according to Eurogamer, this isn't just routine maintenance. The site claims to have seen video evidence that an exploit has been discovered which allows anyone with a PlayStation Network user's associated email address and birth date to take over the account; the exact same information compromised during last month's data breach.

The folks at Chair Entertainment promised that they would be supporting "Infinity Blade" long after the game's launch, and thus far they've made good on that promise. We've seen new weapons, items and even story-revealing segments of the castle added to the game, but this Thursday the title may be seeing its most important update yet: Multiplayer.

On Thursday, you'll finally have the chance to pre-order the long-rumored (and subsequently delayed) Xperia Play, a.k.a. the PlayStation Phone. While the device received a European launch early last month, it will arrive on American shores May 26 through Verizon. The phone will also come pre-loaded with a number of games.

When a superhero inspired blockbuster hits theaters, it's bound to make its way to video game platforms as well, and such is the case of Paramount Pictures' latest superhero movie "Thor." The Son of Odin is making his console debut on multiple platforms, each made by different developers, as Sega spread out the responsibilities for its latest licensed game. While the console versions of "Thor: God of Thunder" turned up as the excepted third-person hack-and-slashers, the DS received some special treatment, as the development was handled by little screen specialists WayForward.
