This fall, you and some friends can dress up as your favorite Disney characters, joining forces for some multiplayer action. Disney Interactive announced today the upcoming release of "Disney Universe" for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and Mac. The game looks like it could be a lot of fun, but the characters seem a bit – familiar?
Based on the few details announced in the press release, and from what can be seen in the trailer, it looks like "Disney Universe" will have you playing cooperatively through six levels based on popular Disney properties. Those include both animated and live-action Disney films, as well as Pixar titles. In addition, you and up to three friends wear cartoony outfits based on Disney characters.
Those character-themed suits are more than just fashion statements, though. Each costume offers a specific tool that will change and increase in power as you progress through the game's levels. There are over 40 costumes available, with the press release this morning including "Tron", "Alice in Wonderland," "Monsters, Inc," and "Lilo & Stitch" themed outfits as wearable in the game.
“The fast-paced, frenetic gameplay combined with wacky humor and hilarious situations make 'Disney Universe' the perfect game to play with family and friends,” said senior vice president of publishing, Adam Sussman via press release.
The game looks interesting enough for family fare, but I can't help but notice the distinct similarities to "Little Big Planet." Four-player cooperative play? Check. Silly costumes where the giant-eyed character's face hangs out? Check. Just watch the video I linked to above; everything right down to the the character movements and tongue-wagging facial expressions reminds me of "Little Big Planet." I don't see anything in regards to "Disney Universe" including user-created content, but I'm willing to bet this game ends up looking quite a bit like the Media Molecule platformer.
