Sonic the hedgehog has been through ups and downs over his 20 year history, and his recent years haven't been exactly bountiful. According to the review tracking site, GameRankings.com, the last Sonic game to breach an over 85% review score average was "Sonic Advance 2," which released back in 2003. Recent attempts to reboot the blue rodent have ranged from dismal to mediocre, and a true, 2D sequel, "Sonic The Hedgehog 4," was met with disappointment from fans. It's those same fans that Sega is attempting recapture in "Sonic Generations," a game which blends the old with the new on one disc.

Details on the single-player story in "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" have been slowly trickling out, but we've heard very little so far about the return of the multiplayer mode that made the previous game such a lasting hit with fans. Until today. It turns out that Naughty Dog plans to seriously up the ante for online play in the November-releasing sequel, with a host of new features and play modes that not only improve the in-game experience but also extend out into the Internet's larger Socialsphere.

One of the long-running complaints about "Oblivion" was its limiting experience system. In order to level up their character, players had to use skills which they selected as "primary skills" at the beginning of the game. Players would even intentionally avoid using primary skills to keep from leveling up faster so that the game's scaled monsters wouldn't get harder. It was ridiculous.
In "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim," the experience system has been modified significantly to make things a bit more straight forward. At a recent press event, Todd Howard, the game's director at Bethesda Game Studios, explained some of the differences.
NOTE: Many of the specifics on skills, races and perks are still being developed. As we get closer to the game's 11/11/11 release date, we'll be updating this feature with more detailed information.

One of the major release delays that popped up after a massive earthquake and resulting tsunami rocked the nation of Japan last month was for the PlayStation 3-exclusive offroad racer, "MotorStorm: Apocalypse." The Evolution Studios-developed game was originally set to arrive on April 12, though that changed to TBA status almost immediately after the tragic events. Now Sony has nailed down and announced an official North American release date: May 3.

By the time "Battlefield 3" comes out this fall, you'll have seen the game's opening sections so many times that you'll be able to get through them blindfolded. The multitude of trailers released so far by Electronic Arts and DICE so far all pull their footage from the same early-in-the-game demo that's been going around since before GDC. Another one arrives today, bolstered with a few tiny snippets of new footage and a promise of more to come.

Isn't it great when dreams come true? For Ska Studio's Lead Dishwasher, James Silva, the Xbox Live Indie Games movement helped him, not only keep his dreams alive, but go on to release two of Xbox Live Arcades best games, "The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai" and "The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile." As a true testament to how the indie games scene can help you quit your day job, and go on to do much bigger things with your life, Mr. Silva owes a lot of his success to hard work, self-motivation and perseverance, which makes him an ideal candidate for this week's Developer Pop Quiz.

Nintendo kicked off a revolution with its Wii console back in 2006. It wasn't the motion controls that did it, cool as they are. It was the audience it attracted. Here you had daily gamers lining up on launch day alongside mothers and fathers shopping for themselves. Mobile platforms have since followed the lead and run with it, but the Wii was first on the scene to make the concept of "casual" cool. Now there's reliable word coming in that Nintendo is planning a reveal for this year's E3, a first look at a new console which will -- among other things -- correct one highly notable absence in the Wii's hardware specification: high definition visuals.

In our review of "Metro 2033," we called it an "an incredibly difficult but rewarding, moody game." Although not perfect, it had its own look and feel, and garnered a dedicated fan base. Last summer, THQ's Danny Bilson confirmed that a sequel was on the way, when talking about the efforts to add 3D visuals to the original game. "We're going to be doing a 3D version of that on 'Metro 2034' -- the sequel," he said. If recent THQ URL filings are any indication, though, the "Metro 2033" sequel will go under a different name: "Metro 2033: Last Light."

Developer WXP Games is probably known best in the current console generation for its work on the Xbox 360 movie trivia title "Sceneit? Lights, Camera Action." Or perhaps you are familiar with last year's Wii/DS monster, "The Daring Game for Girls" (an admittedly awesome name). The studio is now preparing to delve into the FPS space, as it did with the last-gen release "Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball Max'd," with a newly announced Xbox Live Arcade shooter "Xotic," which will be published by Valcon Games LLC and TikGames.

Ducking behind cover, I start unloading round after round into an approaching Locust soldier. He's wounded, but I quickly realize that my opponent is bearing down on me at an unfortunate rate. I stand up, ready for the imminent melee encounter, frantically mashing down the B-button. The familiar whirring sound of a gun-mounted chainsaw just barely begins before I realize it's too late: the man himself, Cliff Bleszinski, has just crammed a Retro Lancer blade through my gizzard.
After spending a few nights with the "Gears of War 3" multiplayer beta, I'm convinced that the game's competitive component will prove appealing to veteran fans and newcomers alike.
