The "Serious Sam" franchise was born out of an era of video games where it was common to ask just how many guns a game had, and if the answer was below 100, that game was written off as edutainment. Those days of mindless FPS games are mostly behind us, but "Serious Sam" continues to truck on alongside "Duke Nukem Forever," waving the flag for all things stupid and exploding. You may already know that "Serious Sam 3: BFE" is sticking to the core FPS model, but there's another "Sam" game on the way that's more of a side-scrolling, "Contra"-style shooter. That game is "Serious Sam: Double D," and it has a feature which heralds a new age of stupid/awesome shooters.

We learned a few new details about "Max Payne 3" earlier this month, including what brings the game's setting from New York to Brazil and how the design is informed by "Half-Life." As is often the case with any online store, Nintendo has had varying levels of success with its download-focused e-nitiatives, WiiWare and DSiWare. Now that the 3DS is here and features more integrated web connectivity than any Nintendo release before it, an online shopping portal has been a foregone conclusion. The 3DS eShop is set to arrive via an update sometime next month, and top Nintendo creative Shigeru Miyamoto promises to deliver content for it that is designed to please gamers by making use of the 3DS' unique features.

Escalation, the second map pack to be released this year for "Call of Duty: Black Ops," is arriving next week, on May 3. The DLC, which will arrive on Xbox 360 first and on PS3/PC at some unspecified future date, adds four multiplayer maps and one co-op zombies map to the game, just like the previous pack, First Strike, did. A pair of new videos offers an in-depth look at Escalation; nothing on the new zombies map, Call of the Dead, of course, but plenty of action from Hotel, Zoo, Convoy and Stockpile, in two separate videos embedded after the jump.

Sony's PlayStation Network went down late last Wednesday, along with the company's Qrirocity music service. The system failure was reported by Sony to be the result of an "external intrusion," a PlayStation Blog post revealed. An additional update was offered on Saturday, though there's still no indication of when service will be restored for the million of affected users.

The last week has been packed to the gills with rumors about a new console coming from Nintendo which would act as a follow-up to the widely successful Wii. Sources have claimed specific features, like controllers with DS-like screens built into them and comparable power to the PS3 and 360. Nintendo has been relatively mum about details surrounding the new console, apart from Shigeru Miyamoto telling people to "be patient" as they wait for more information. The company-mandated cone of silence ended today as Nintendo revealed that they are indeed working on a new console for 2012 and that it will be playable in time for this year's E3 in June.

Update: Remind me to stop reading into countdown clocks. Seems the countdown was created by fans who have been playing the "Portal 2" ARG (thanks Jim!). Hopes of pneumatic tubes dashed!
Original Story: At the launch of "Portal 2," some members of the internet through a hissy fit over the game's collection of day one downloadable content (even though it was just a bunch of hats for your co-op robots). It did make some wonder whether we'd be seeing anything more substantial by way of DLC for the game, and Valve might be answering that question in just a few hours. The developer sent this letter out to members of the press which is basically written as a memo from the offices of Aperture Science. The letter points to yet another mysterious ARG site with a countdown clock.

Whether you're calling it Project Café or Wii 2, the fact is (as we understand it) that Nintendo is preparing to launch a new console in the next year or so. Reports peg the announcement as coming at or before E3 in June, and hopefully the tidal wave of rumors will spur the company to do it sooner rather than later. Probably not though. Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto isn't willing to talk about it, as a recent interview with the "Zelda" and "Mario" creator made clear.

Developer Pop Quiz is a weekly interview series in which we ask developers from around the industry the same 10 questions and post their responses.
Imagine living three doors down from one of the guys credited for bringing the original "Mortal Kombat" to life, and then, years later, working on the reboot of that very franchise. Such is the story of the subject of this week's Developer Pop Quiz, NetherRealm Studio's Producer Hector Sanchez. Growing up and going to the same high school as John Tobias (and The Wachowski Brothers and Michelle Obama) had a profound affect on him as a gamer and throughout his career in the games industry. Also influenced by the passing of his brother and his work with the Developmentally Disabled, Sanchez has one of the most upbeat attitudes in the industry, and proof that people with virtually any kind of background could be making the games that you love.
