This week just keeps getting worse for Sony. After shutting down the PlayStation Network for over a week, the company announced yesterday that users' information (possibly even credit card data) may have been swiped by an unknown assailant. Since that time, Sony has come under deep criticism from the gaming community, with many questioning how long the company was actually aware of the breach. Now, government representatives from both the United States and the United Kingdom are actively seeking answers into what went wrong.

As if there wasn't enough nefarious activity surrounding online game services in recent days, Microsoft has now alerted "Modern Warfare 2" players to a potential phishing scheme. It's unclear whether anyone has actually been affected by this latest attempt to steal gamers' personal information, or if Microsoft is just preemptively trying to avoid a PlayStation Network grade catastrophe.

Captain America: Super Soldier

Sega's reputation for super hero games is not exactly glowing. After two medicore "Iron Man" games and an equally middling "Incredible Hulk" game, no one would fault you for writing off any future Sega super hero projects as skippable. But at least one of those projects seems to be bucking the trend: "Captain America: Super Soldier."

I had seen the game at last year's New York Comic Con, where it was clear that it had more than a passing resemblance to "Batman: Arkham Asylum." The game was too early in development, though, for me to know whether it would hold its own against the magnificent "Arkham." A preview event earlier this month, however, clarified things nicely. I'm officially excited for a Sega super hero game.

PlayStation Network

You're no doubt aware that the PlayStation Network has been down for the last week, and today Sony came forward with an explanation. Seems one or more hackers got access to all sorts of private user account information, which includes names and addresses, but may also include credit card and billing information.

We've been updating our original PlayStation Network Error post with Sony's continued statements about the situation, so head there now to get the latest.

soulcalibur 4

There's a new "Mortal Kombat" on store shelves now, and the word is that it's pretty damn good. Between that and "Street Fighter 4" its been a good couple of years for fighting games. That said, the "Soulcalibur" series has been notably absent since 2008, when the fourth game in the series was released. Although it was great (and featured "Star Wars" characters!), "Soulcalibur" really peaked as a series with its third installment, "Soulcalibur 2." Can it recapture that former glory as "Street Fighter" and "Mortal Kombat" did? It looks like we'll get our first glimpse of the possibilities sometime next month.

call of duty black ops

Hopefully you've already seen the new trailer from Activision for the "Call of the Dead" zombies map in next week's Escalation DLC for "Call of Duty: Black Ops." If you haven't, go watch it. Right now. We're going to talk about it after the jump, the various new features revealed and possibly revealed in the generous-yet-still-painfully-short series of images that flash by. Spoilers(?) and screen caps to come. You've been warned.

call of duty black ops

Excitement has been steadily mounting for next week's release of the second map pack for "Call of Duty: Black Ops." All of this despite the fact that Activision and Treyarch have shown little more than a half-second of footage from the new zombie map, Call of the Dead.

Well. That changes today. Hit the jump and press play.

LA Noire

Last night, the Tribeca Film Festival broke down some barriers by allowing a video game to be screened as part of the festival. That game? "LA Noire," Rockstar's Los Angeles-based period piece which is scheduled for release next month. I had seen the game before, though last night's presentation did highlight a new case. The case involved tracking down the killer of a murdered wife, found stripped and brutally beaten in a park. And while much of the demo focused on slow, strategic police work, there were a few action scenes, as well.

Which brings us to the question, if Rockstar is looking to bring in new or non-gamers for "LA Noire," is there some concern about alienating them with traditional shooter or driving gameplay? What if it's too hard for them? Rockstar has apparently thought of that.

satoru iwata

I don't think anyone can really say that Nintendo did a poor job with the Wii. It perhaps isn't what some gamers were hoping for in the company's current-generation console, but it has nonetheless been an unqualified success, particularly in contributing to the exponential growth of the so-called "casual" gaming market. Despite that success, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has some regrets, which he shared at an investors' conference this morning.

phantasy star online 2

It's okay if you can't keep up with the many twists and turns that the "Phantasy Star" series has taken over the years. All you need to know for today's news is that "Phantasy Star Online," which was the series' first step into an Internet-connected world as a year 2000 Dreamcast release, has a numbered sequel in the works.
