We learned in March that Radical Entertainment will be turning things around for former protagonist Alex Mercer in "Prototype 2." He'll actually be the Enemy this time, pursued across the healing streets of a virus-wracked Manhattan by the grief-stricken military veteran, Sergeant James Heller. A new developer diary delves into some of that backstory, and you can check it out after the jump.
As we learned previously, Heller is freshly back from a tour overseas when he learns that his family was killed in the aftermath of the virus' spread through New York City. Mercer is blamed for those events, and he is also the one responsible for infecting Heller at the start of the game. The rest of the story unfolds around Heller's pursuit, and his attempts to destroy his maker.
Swapping Mercer out for Heller allows Radical to sidestep the issue of starting the sequel off with a protagonist who has already built his powers to their zenith during the events of the first game. I'm still not entirely convinced that Heller and Mercer won't be joining forces at some point, but the thrust of what sets the old soldier off on his journey is a revenge plot.
Be sure to watch the above clip to its very end for a glimpse of some pre-alpha gameplay footage. It's basically a bunch of shots of Heller kicking the crap out of everything with his wide array of virus-spawned powers. It's not our first look at the gameplay, but more is always better. "Prototype 2" is set for release sometime in 2012 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.
