homefront

"Homefront" hit stores this week, riding along on a wave of anticipation spurred by preview reports of a robust multiplayer mode and a solo campaign story conceived by "Red Dawn" director/co-writer John Milius. The game sold well on launch day too, with THQ reporting 375,000 day-one sales in North America, though word is now surfacing that players are dealing with some freezing issues in the console releases.

Think back. Way back. Way, way back. To 2009. An eternity in video game time. 2009's BlizzCon was pretty eventful, featuring the reveal of "World of WarCraft: Cataclysm" and the Monk class for "Diablo 3." Blizzard also took the opportunity to show of the next version of Battle.net, the one that would ship with "StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty." While many of the features that were discussed ended up making it into the final release, some have not. For example, Blizzard mentioned that they were working on App Store-like functionality for Battle.net which would allow players to browse, download and even buy fan-created "StarCraft 2" maps and mods right through the interface.

eve online

Last week's 9.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan last week and resulting tsunami has left the country fending off a looming nuclear meltdown while trying to rebuild its damaged infrastructure. It's a horrible situation, and our thoughts go out to friends, families, strangers and fellow gamers alike over there during what must certainly be a difficult time. A number of video game industry leaders in the region have already stepped up with donations and relief efforts, but one entity in particular stands out among the rest, having truly taken things to another level: CCP Games, the developer of the space-based MMO "EVE Online."

prey 2

Bethesda Softworks released the first teaser for "Prey 2" today following the sequel's announcement earlier this week. Considering that the original "Prey" was announced in 1995 and wasn't released until 2006, that's a pretty solid improvement already.

batman arkham city

The Riddler was equal parts awesome and disappointing in "Batman: Arkham Asylum." Awesome because he was present throughout the game, constantly presenting players with location-based riddles to solve as a sort of interactive collectible. Disappointing because he never once showed his face! What kind of villain could he be if you never have to fight him?! Well it looks like that may all be changing in this year's sequel, "Batman: Arkham City," thanks to some new images released by developer Rocksteady Studios.

Okamiden

"Okami" will go down as one of the PlayStation 2's late-life masterworks, a true testament to the types of games that one of the most popular consoles ever could really produce at its pinnacle. As one of the last games developed by Capcom's Clover Studio, it mixed classic Japanese mythology with gorgeous graphics and original gameplay. Five years after its release, it is finally seeing a much-deserved sequel, "Okamiden." Although it's being released on another platform that is in its latter days, "Okamiden" replicates the key elements of its predecessor, while scaling down the gameplay for celestial painting on the go.

homefront

"Homefront" is pretty short. That's putting it mildly. My own review playthrough of the solo campaign took less than five hours to finish on the game's normal difficulty setting. This is considerably shorter than most single-player offerings, even when the game also features a deep multiplayer component, as this one does. Developer Kaos Studios knows the game is short, and wants you to know that they know.

battlefield 3

If there's one thing we've learned so far about "Battlefield 3" that can't be argued, it's that the game looks stunningly gorgeous. DICE's Frostbite 2 engine can really do some beautiful things with death and destruction. You see a little bit of the latter in the developer's latest episode of "Fault Lines" gameplay previews, entitled "Good Effect On Target."

Last week I had the chance to sit down with Mike Morhaime and Frank Pearce, two of the three co-founders of Blizzard Entertainment. The interview was pegged to the company's 20 year anniversary, so we ran through the history of Blizzard, from their early days as Silicon & Synapse to their relatively shrouded future.

brink

Why should you care about "Brink"? Splash Damage, the developer, is probably the main reason. The studio previously did "Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory" and "Enemy Territory: Quake Wars," two games that don't suck at all. This is the first original game from Splash, and the team there brings a wealth of experience developing class-based online shooters to the table. There's a new trailer showing how that particular background has informed "Brink" after the jump, as well as some tantalizing UK pre-orders for the game that will hopefully be coming to the United States as well.
