Ghost Recon

Even before I got my hands on the final, US version of the Nintendo 3DS, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. I had played the vast majority of the launch games at preview events and knew which were the ones that had promise and which were, well, fodder. One game that never made it to any of those preview events was "Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars." I had seen it in the list of launch games for the 3DS, but admittedly didn't expect much more than a half-hearted FPS on a handheld not really suited for FPS games. Seems I was way off.

dark souls

Details have been slowly trickling out about From Software's upcoming, "Dark Souls," a spiritual successor to 2009's "Demon's Souls." No one is expecting the ride to get any easier after the last painfully difficult -- and comparatively rewarding -- game, but many questions have been asked about how the new game's online component will follow up on its predecessor's message-giving system and light co-op/competitive elements. We have some new answers for you today, compliments of the game's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, speaking in a new interview featured in the latest Edge.

duke nukem forever

"Duke Nukem" is not exactly a series known for its political correctness, and no one is expecting Triptych Games and Gearbox Software's upcoming "Duke Nukem Forever" to be any different. Details of the game's multiplayer component were revealed today, and while most of what's there is pretty standard, there is one mode that unquestionably takes things just a little too far: Capture the Babe.

deus ex human revolution

Much noise has been made about "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" sticking to its roots by offering players multiple ways to complete its various missions. "Right," you immediately think. "I've heard this before." And you have. So why not see it in action? Just check out the new gameplay trailer that Eidos Montreal released today.

Madden NFL 12

Last year, EA decided to hand over the "Madden" cover athlete decision to the fans. The end result was the pretty obvious choice of Drew Brees, who had won Super Bowl XLIV with the New Orleans Saints earlier in the year. The fan decision didn't come until the choices were narrowed down to just three players (Drew Brees, Reggie Wayne and Jared Allen), but this year things are starting up a bit earlier. EA is holding a bracket-style competition with ESPN, pitting 32 players against each other for the top honors of helming "Madden NFL 12."

legendary wars

Liv Games' new iOS release "Legendary Wars" does not get off to a promising start. Generic fantasy setting, cartoon-y visuals, races and character class names all saddled with an adorable "y" -- "knights" are "knightys," "elves" are "elfys," etc. -- and more besides; you've either seen this before or you're afraid the cute factor will render it boring and stupid.

Just know: if you walk away right there, you'll be missing out on one of the strongest remixes of the "Plants Vs. Zombies" formula that the App Store has seen.

silent hill downpour

"Silent Hill: Homecoming" is a tough act to follow, but everything we've seen from the new developer's follow-up "Silent Hill: Downpour" is looking promising. One thing it won't feature, however, is multiplayer. Which isn't too surprising since the series has always had a single-player focus. What is surprising is news that Konami is toying with the possibility of a multiplayer "Silent Hill" game.

prey 2

"Prey 2" was announced exactly one week ago, news that was shortly after followed by a gripping, yet totally non-revealing, live action teaser trailer. Today brings our first details on the game, which apparently finds comparisons with just about every other game ever conceived, according to the developer.

Angry Birds Rio

The most over-marketed app of all time, "Angry Birds Rio," is finally seeing release in Apple's App Store today. (In fact, if you live in New Zealand or thereabouts, it's already available). The game is a cross-promotional effort between "Angry Birds" developer, Rovio, and the Fox, which is distributing the upcoming animated film, "Rio."

stacking

It is entirely fair to say that the digital download release "Stacking" is Tim Schafer and Double Fine's finest game since "Psychonauts." Because it is. The charmingly adorable puzzle-adventure casts players as Charlie Blackmore, the tiniest Russian stacking doll of them all. With a presentation and tone that mirrors the era of silent films, players explore Charlie's bizarre, doll-filled world, inserting himself into larger dolls, each with different abilities, as he attempts to solve an array of puzzles. The only downer is that, as a digital-only release, it's a short game. Double Fine has you covered though; today brings official word of "The Lost Hobo King," the first DLC pack for "Stacking"!
