3DS crade

When I was first unpacking the Nintendo 3DS last week, I was admittedly perplexed about the charging cradle that Nintendo included with every system. After all, you can simply plug the device in to charge it, even without the cradle. You can even use your old DSi charger if you want. But, after a week of putting the 3DS through its paces, it all makes sense now. Were it not for the cradle, my 3DS would be in bad shape.

bomberman 3ds

Nintendo's new 3DS portable gaming system is out this Sunday, finally bringing the much-talked-about glasses-free 3-D gaming to one and all. Between the 18 games arriving on day one and the others that follow in the weeks after, there are going to be quite options for those looking to get the most out of their new purchase. Unfortunately, the list of upcoming releases just got a little bit shorter, as there's word coming out of Japan that the three 3DS jams that were coming from Hudson have now been cancelled.

hogrocket studios

It was a sad day for one and all when Bizarre Creations closed its doors for good last month. The "Geometry Wars" and "Project Gotham Racing" developer had been struggling with its more recent releases, but no one really wanted to see it go. Activision, the studio's former owner, tried to sell Bizarre off and expressed sincere regret at not being able to do say when it issued the closure recommendation. Cheer up though. From the ashes of Bizarre comes Hogrocket, with a core team made up of key members from the now-closed studio.

resident evil 4

If the endless array of "Resident Evil" re-releases and console ports have taught us anything, it's this: gamers like their confusing zombie stories. Miraculously, Capcom has managed to get fans excited almost every time a new port of one of the older games is announced. At least this time it's a rather easy sell, since a couple of classic "RE" titles are going HD on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

iPad 2

We all know that the iPad 2 is a pretty versatile device for everything from email to web-browsing to watching videos or Facetime-ing. We also know that it's notably thinner than its predecessor, making it more viable for the day-to-day commute. But something that many people don't know is that it's a much more powerful device. The new dual-core chip is two times faster than the original iPad, and the graphics chip is a whopping nine times more powerful. Those two factors alone are great news for gamers, as the iPad 2 is a beast of a handheld gaming device.

If you're used to using the original iPad, you'll actually see an improvement in every single game you play (yes, even "Angry Birds HD"), with smoother frame rates and quicker load times. Some games, however, are especially good at showing off the meat of the system, and if you're looking to shame friends into agreeing that your $500+ investment was worth it, these should be the first ones you download.

batman arkham city

"Batman: Arkham Asylum" offered a nifty bonus mode with its challenge maps, offering players an opportunity to test there skills as the Caped Crusader in a range of discrete mini-missions which stood apart from the main story. Rocksteady Studios hasn't been entirely forthcoming about what "Batman: Arkham City" will offer outside of its story mode, but newly revealed info about the game's pre-order bonuses confirm that at least those challenge maps will be returning.

spider-man shattered dimensions

Activision confirmed back in January that "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" developer Beenox would be taking the lead on all future Spidey games for the publisher. We'll see the first fruits borne from that announcement at the annual WonderCon gathering in Los Angeles in a few week when Activision and Beenox announce the next game featuring Marvel Comics' nimble superhero.

Lego Star Wars III

To say that Lego and "Star Wars" are a match made in heaven is an understatement. When the first "Lego Star Wars" game was released in 2005 it nailed the sweet spot between entertaining and adorable, while still making the fans happy, which, of course led to sequels. However, there's only so many "Star Wars" movies that you can turn into Lego games, but over the last couple of years LucasArts has put a lot of support behind the canonical expanded universe of "The Clone Wars." The original animated series bridged the gap between "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith," but since then there have been new large and small screen adaptations of the series, and now the spin-off is complete, with its own Lego video game, "Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars," but this expanded universe may be extending itself a little too far.

grand theft auto

Most of us are content to head out to the store, drop $60 on the counter and head home with a shiny, new game clutched tightly in our hands. And that's fine. Some take their nerdery to the next level, attempting to understand the process by which a game goes from initial concept to final release. Today brings some insight in the form of design documents for the original release in a franchise that continues to be one of the most successful on the planet: Rockstar Games' (formerly DMA Design) "Grand Theft Auto."

"Crysis 2" is out today and, for the first time, the franchise is coming to consoles. It's great news for shooter fans and not-having-a-three-thousand-dollar-computer fans, but if you're a newcomer to the franchise, you're probably going to be dying. A lot.
