Virtual warriors will once again be taking the fight to the invading Chimera later this year when Insomniac Games releases the third chapter in its alternate history alien invasion series, "Resistance 3." The studio held its community day in Los Angeles yesterday, where it revealed that the upcoming sequel will include support for stereoscopic 3-D displays and Sony's PlayStation Move motion controller (and the Sharp Shooter gun mount). Why? Because the community demanded it.
That's what the headline of the PlayStation Blog post announcing the news says: "'Resistance 3' Will Support 3D, PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter Thanks to Community Demand." Community, you can now end your ongoing terror campaign. Your demands have been heard, and met.
Hints of "Resistance 3" being in development -- as if anyone expected otherwise -- first surfaced in 2009, with a set photo from the movie "Battle: Los Angeles" featuring a billboard for the upcoming sequel. It was later confirmed by Sony at its Gamescom 2010 press conference last year on August 17.
More recently, Insomniac confirmed that the new game's multiplayer mode will be scaled back from the 60-player match sizes seen in "Resistance 2." The third game will bring things down to a more manageable 16-player match size, with similarly downsized maps to support the more intimate battlefield engagements.
"Resistance 3" will also do away with multiplayer classes, in favor of a more open-ended approach that focuses on customization. Players will be able to pick and choose the abilities they want to unlock, with passive buffs similar to the Perks in the "Call of Duty" series joined by active abilities that can be triggered on the D-pad. These latter abilities "are more extreme and game-changing," according to "Resistance 3" creative director Matt Smith. Look for the game in stores later this year on September 6.
