In the past, I've proclaimed my fondness for playing games on Easy. But, if a game is well-made and not frustrating to the point of unfair on higher difficulty levels, I'm happy to give myself a challenge. Case in point: "Crysis 2." Since I'm pretty experienced with stealth games, I figured I'd jump into Crytek's sequel on the hardest difficulty setting, Super Soldier. After all, if I'm playing stealthy, being able to get shot 3 times versus 6 times before death shouldn't matter.
Even on lower difficulty settings, "Crysis 2" is a serious challenge. One misstep or misused power has the potential to wipe away all the progress you've made since the last checkpoint, and this might be as long as 15 or 20 minutes. Finishing on Super Soldier felt like an accomplishment. An achievement, even! Evidently the game didn't think so. Upon finishing the game, just two achievements unlocked: the one for beating it on any difficulty setting and the one for beating it on Veteran. But where was my 65 point Super Soldier achievement? I went online to find out.
Seems I'm not alone. On 360Achievements.org, a site dedicated to the collection of digital trophies, a forum post is up to 50 responses, many of whom experienced the same thing I did. And we demand satisfaction!
Cursory research seems to imply that the problem arises when players start the game on Super Soldier instead of beating the game on the lower difficulty settings first. It's possible that, early on in development, the Super Soldier setting was locked until players beat the game on those lower settings, and maybe the achievement glitch stems from that.
I realize it's a bit silly to make a big deal about this, but imagine running a marathon and not getting the completion medal. It would sour the experience a bit, wouldn't it? I've reached out to Crytek to see if they are aware of the issue and whether it's something they're working to fix with a title update.
