"Star Fox" protagonist Fox McCloud isn't as big a deal as Mario or Link, but the Shigeru Miyamoto-created character is still enduringly popular. He's also a perfect fit for CollegeHumor's send-up of director Wes Anderson's 2009 Roald Dahl adaptation, "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Hit the jump to see what may well be the greatest video game-to-film adaptation of all time, "Fantastic Mr. Star Fox."
The mock trailer uses the same stop-motion animation style that Anderson employed in his superb adaptation. It also clearly appreciates the filmmaker's particular sense of aesthetics, with an acoustic indie soundtrack, soul-searching dialogue and quirky visual stylings. McCloud may be a dashing anthropomorphized space-fox hero and hotshot fighter pilot, but he also has feelings.
"I thought I blamed a giant space head for my father's death... but now I think I blame myself."
Powerful stuff. Especially with voice contributions from George Clooney (no), Bill Murray (not really) and Owen Wilson (as if).
We are supposed to be seeing Fox McCloud and his pals again later this year when "Star Fox 64 3D" releases for the soon-to-launch Nintendo 3DS. There's no word on exactly when, but Nintendo says it'll be sometime in "2011."
It is a remake of the classic Nintendo 64 game, newly converted to take advantage of the handheld device's unique display capabilities. It is also the second game in the series to get a portable release, the first being the 2006 Nintendo DS game, "Star Fox Command." There has not been a console release in the series since the 2005 GameCube title, "Star Fox: Assault."
