Much love to Volition, Inc. for continuing to laugh in the face of Rockstar Games' open-world genre superiority with the "Saints Row" series' dual focus on awesome, over-the-top gameplay and outright parody. Threequel "Saints Row: The Third" was just announced at the 2011 Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco, Cali for release this fall along with a few story details which shed some light on what to expect from this third outing.
Here's what publisher's Ubisoft's fact sheet has to say:
Years after taking Stilwater for their own, the Third Street Saints have evolved from street gang to household brand name, with Saints sneakers, Saints energy drinks and Johnny Gat bobble head dolls all available at a store near you.
The Saints are kings of Stilwater, but their celebrity status has not gone unnoticed. The Syndicate, a legendary criminal fraternity with pawns in play all over the globe, has turned its eye on the Saints and demands tribute. Refusing to kneel to the Syndicate, you take the fight to Steelport, a once-proud metropolis reduced to a struggling city of sin under Syndicate control.
Take a tank skydiving, call in a satellite-targeted airstrike on a Mexican wrestling gang, and defend yourself against a highly-trained military force using only a sex toy in the most out-landish gameplay scenarios ever seen, igniting a city-wide war that will set Steelport on fire. Strap it on.
So Steelport is our new city, and based on the description it seems that it will be modeled, at least in part, after Detroit. Your adversary in this game in The Syndicate, just about the most unoriginal name for a criminal organization imaginable. Which makes it perfect for the unique "Saints Row" blend of humor. And finally... tank skydiving. That one speaks for itself.
Also, how much do you want to bet that the inevitable special edition release ships with a Johnny Gat bobble head? "Saints Row: The Third" ships this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC platforms.
