portal 2

Valve's "Portal 2" is going to be here before you know it. It seemed like it was forever away back when the sequel was first announced, but the fully confirmed April 18 North American release is going to be here before you know it. For those who are so absolutely certain they're going to buy it that they're willing to put down some money now -- what we in the industry call a "pre-order" -- Valve detailed the various goodies you stand to receive from the range of retailers as a bonus for your loyalty.

Sesame Street

Of all the developers to handle a kid-friendly Sesame Street game, I can't I would've put Double Fine at the top of my list. After all, the company developed the decidedly un-kid-friendly "Brutal Legend." And yet, when you consider the rest of their games, it makes a lot of sense. "Pyschonauts," "Costume Quest" and their latest, "Stacking," are far from inappropriate for most ages. And all of Double Fine's games have a whimsical charm which seems to mesh with Jim Henson's style. So, in thinking about it, it makes plenty of sense that Warner Bros. would contract the developer to work on "Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster," an upcoming Kinect-centric Xbox 360 game.

transformers dark of the moon

"Transformers: War for Cybertron" wasn't exactly a great game, but it honored the franchise roots very well with a cool story, top-notch voice acting/sound design and well-designed robots. The play got a little repetitive, but fans responded with appreciation to the rest of it and many logged plenty of hours in the game's reasonably robust multiplayer. Activision must have been pleased with the results too, as "Cybertron" developer High Moon is now working on a game that ties into this summer's Michael Bay blockbuster, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

Assassin's Creed

A few months ago, I spent a while trying to piece together the possible setting of "Assassin's Creed 3." My logic seemed sound and involved plenty of Wikipedia research (the very best kind of research!) and I concluded that the next "Assassin's Creed" game would take place during the American Revolution. Mere moments after the post went up, I was pointed to other evidence which seemed to imply that the French Revolution might indeed be the focal point of the next game. Either way, nothing was 100%.

Thankfully we needn't wait too long for an answer as to the setting of the next "Assassin's Creed" game. Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, confirmed in an earnings report, saying "We will have an 'Assassin's Creed' this year...we are going to give you more details in May." He went on to say that the game would be a "packaged title," which rules out a sneaky iPhone or downloadable release.

batman arkham city

"Batman: Arkham City" is going to be here before you know it. There's no confirmed release date just yet, but reports have pegged it for Q3 2011 -- roughly the same time of year "Arkham Asylum" dropped two years ago -- and developer Rocksteady Studios is starting to do the press circuit. The latest update comes from an extensive interview with the game's director Sefton Hill in which he discusses a variety of topics, including multiplayer (it's not there), how fan feedback informed the team for the next game and the first game's super-secret hint about this year's sequel.

FEAR 3

The "FEAR" franchise has been through some ups and downs, with the last installment falling into the regrettably "forgettable" category. It basically devolved into a typical first-person shooter game that just so happened to have ghosts. For "FEAR 3," there's a bit more variety being thrown in. We already knew that the game would support co-op throughout the campaign, with players choosing between two vastly different characters, but now that option will be granted to people playing through solo, as well.

mortal kombat rebirth

You remember the awesome "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" trailer that popped up last year, right? The live-action short film, that we later learned was a grassroots bid from "Fame" remake director Kevin Tancheroen, was immediately latched onto by fans for doing something the previous "MK" movies couldn't: look and feel as gritty and effed up as the games. "Rebirth" was recently confirmed for a web series treatment and today Warner Bros. announced the initial casting for the coming Tancheroen-directed shorts.

Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds

A decade is a long time to wait for a sequel, but when Capcom lost the license for Marvel fighting games after "Marvel Vs. Capcom 2" it became apparent that hope could be lost for a third title in the series. However, it seems that the last ten years was actually more of an incubation period than anything else, allowing both Marvel and Capcom time to hone their skills when it comes to the cross-over fighting game, and wait for the right time to strike with "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds." Bringing together some of the most recognizable characters from both universes, "MvC 3" may be the biggest example of a fan service game ever released on a console.

crysis 2

Horrible news for Electronic Arts and "Crysis" developer Crytek over the weekend. The developer's upcoming "Crysis 2," which is due for release on March 22 in North America, leaked online. It's a pretty serious leak too, as reports peg what's floating around as a complete, albeit incredibly buggy, dev build of the game, complete with multiplayer and the master key for online authentication.
