Bar Karma

The internet isn't always the most cooperative place. After all, most best-laid plans (be it in the middle of a "Halo" match or in a serious forum discussion) are often demolished by one or two rabble-rousers looking to stir the pot. Seems like a TV show based primarily on input from internet denizens would be destined for failure, but Will Wright's "Bar Karma" is attempting to buck expectations. As the creator of "Sim City," "The Sims" and "Spore," Wright has always tried to be on the cutting edge, creatively. "Bar Karma" is just as risky. I spoke with him about how the show is coming along and whether he's planning on returning to games anytime soon.

child of eden

Microsoft's Kinect launch last year was hugely successful, though the motion-sensing peripheral hasn't yet managed to fully capture the hearts of die-hard gamers. Twisted Pixel's "The Gunstringer" could work to change that perception, but the game that got gamers from all walks excited at last year's E3 was Ubisoft's "Child of Eden," the Tetsuya Mizuguchi-conceived "Rez" clone which now looks like it will be coming early this summer.

You're probably used to seeing disappointing teaser trailers. Brief 30-second snippets that show you a logo, perhaps a little art or a flash of gameplay masked behind a heavy filter or three. Then you wait another bunch of months before you actually get to see what the game looks like. Bethesda Softworks released a new trailer this morning for "The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim."

It doesn't disappoint.

The Lost Thing

The 2011 Academy Awards are scheduled for this Sunday, and people have plenty of opinions on where the big awards should go. In the category of Animated Short Film, however, people outside of the Academy probably have no clue about any of the nominees (unless they saw Pixar's effort, "Day & Night," at the beginning of "Toy Story 3"). I happened to attend a screening of all of the nominees in New York's IFC Center, and for fans of classic adventure games, there's one obvious stand-out in the pack.

final fantasy 4 complete collection

The enduringly popular "Final Fantasy" series from Square-Enix could probably get by for the next 20 years just releasing remakes and spin-offs of the previous games. This is pretty funny when you think about it, since prior to "Final Fantasy X-2," spin-offs were a no-no for the franchise. Now they're all the rage, and the next one set for release is "Final Fantasy 4 Complete Collection," a PlayStation Portable compilation that brings "FF4," sequel "FF4: The After Years" and the newly written "FF4 Interlude" into one place. But what is this "Interlude"? Today we have our answer.

dead space 2 severed

If you haven't finished "Dead Space 2" yet, it's probably because the thing is so intense that it's impossible to sit and play for more than two hours at a time. Well it's time to get cracking, because the two-chapter single-player DLC add-on "Dead Space 2: Severed" is now officially dated for a March 1 release.

Dragon Quest VI

Since the early 1980s, when Japan became a major player in the video games industry, it's been commonplace for Japanese-developed franchises to have releases that only see the light of day within the Land of the Rising Sun. Up until earlier this month, "Dragon Quest VI" was one of these very games, leaving U.S. fans of the Square Enix RPG in the dark, as the only title in the series to never make its way to the America. However, much like "Dragon Quest IV" and "V," "DQVI" has finally received the remake and re-release treatment that it deserves, as "Realms of Revelation" has landed on the Nintendo DS.

bulletstorm

As you'll already know if you've played "Bulletstorm" or read Russ's review, the experience really lives up to the game's marketing slogan: "Kill creatively." You've got powerful weapons and no shortage of bullets to fire from them, but if you play the game like a standard FPS then you're not going to maximize your full death-dealing capabilities. Fortunately, the game's developers at People Can Fly have become experts on the art of the Skillshot, and they've got a handy little guide to help you get on your feet:

killzone 3

"Killzone 3" came out yesterday, and it's pretty darn fun. However, as is often the case with new game releases these days, it also hits shelves with its fair share of bugs and performance issues that need to be tweaked. Thankfully, Guerrilla Games is on the case with a day zero patch.

battlefield 3

When the gaming press gathers in San Francisco next week for the annual Game Developer's Conference, many of them will get their first at Electronic Arts' recently announced sequel, "Battlefield 3," which is due for release this fall. You won't have to wait to get your own first look at the game however, as DICE has revealed its first set of in-game images and a gameplay trailer to go along with it.
