Bethesda Softworks and id Software's "RAGE" is looking well on its way. The open-world FPS/RPG that looks like a photo-realistic "Borderlands" is set to hit console and PC/Mac platforms on September 13 of this year. The newly released trailer, posted after the jump, is a little light on gameplay... until it smacks you in the face with an onslaught of clips in its final 30 seconds.
In "RAGE," players explore a post-apocalyptic Earth after awakening as the only survivor in an underground vault designed to house the planet's great minds in a cryogenically frozen state while the world above crumbled. Okay, yes, it sounds a little like "Fallout" too. The fact remains that post-apocalyptic settings are fun to explore, especially open-world ones. It also doesn't hurt that id Software, the developer of "Doom" and "Quake" (as the trailer proudly notes) hasn't put out a new AAA game since 2004.
"RAGE" offers a mix of first-person shooting action and dune buggy racing, with RPG mechanics wrapped around it all. Vehicles can be customized and upgraded while weapon effects can tweaked with different ammo loadouts. Plus, there's that throwing blade thing.
The post-apocalypse scenario is "RAGE" is actually based on a real-life future event. The asteroid Apophis is projected to pass by Earth in 2036. The game posits that "pass by" becomes "smacks directly into," causing global devastation. An iOS on-rails shooter "RAGE HD" was released late last year to tease the world in advance of the game's September release for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows and Mac OS X.
