File this news under "Gee, I saw that cmoing!" Nintendo's 3DS is out in March and we already know about coming "Zelda," "Star Fox," "Animal Crossing," "Pilotwings," "Mario Kart" and "Kid Icarus" games being in development. Of course there's a "Super Mario" game coming as well. And who better to confirm the news than Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto himself!
Speaking in the final part of Nintendo's ongoing Iwata Asks series, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the brother plumbers, Miyamoto revealed that they'll be starring in their very own 3DS platformer. He actually named "Super Mario Bros." specifically, which suggests another 2-D offering in the vein of "New Super Mario Bros." and "New Super Mario Bros. Wii."
Here's what he had to say: "So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the 'Super Mario Bros.' tradition, I am now making a new 'Super Mario Bros.' game for the Nintendo 3DS system." Doesn't get any clearer than that, right?
This is excellent news. The Mario series changed the face of gaming in many ways when it went 3-D on Nintendo 64. Those 3-D games still live in the form of the two excellent "Super Mario Galaxy" Wii games. But the "New" series, which started on the Nintendo DS before making its way to the Wii, have been equally well-received with fan love and stellar reviews. Bringing that experience to the 3DS just makes good sense.
Seeing those lush Mario worlds in 3-D is going to be awfully cool too. It shouldn't impact the way the game plays at all, since the 3-D is just a visual effect. But what it boils down to -- hopefully -- is a brand new set of levels for Mario and his brother Luigi to run through, and hopefully a new Goomba-killing suit or two for them to wear.
