For a game with "star" right there in the title, "StarCraft 2" has surprisingly few stars. Sure, you see a few of them in cutscenes and some of the interstellar maps, but it's usually only for a few brief seconds as you're maneuvering from one rock to the next. Seems that fans of the game wanted a bit more on the gaseous cosmic entities front, as some of them have created a new, custom mode called "Star Battle." Played entirely in the depths of space, the mode features no land-based units and, wouldn't you know it, has become incredibly popular!
Fans of "DoTA" will undoubtedly notice some similarities between that and "Star Battle," as they both have you controlling just a single upgradable unit. They also both focus on teamwork, and working together with your fellow ship commanders is the only way you're likely to win the day.
At present, "Star Battle" is one of the most popular custom maps for "StarCraft 2," which makes it a verifiable hit. Players have already started uploading tactics videos, like this one, so you can get a sense of what to expect before being blown to smithereens.
The bright side is that, unlike normal "StarCraft 2" multiplayer, which is heavily rooted in build queues and personal experience, "Star Battle" is much more friendly to newcomers, as you really don't need to know every hotkey in the game in order to succeed.
Of course, like all custom maps, "Star Battle" is completely free, so long as you own a copy of "StarCraft 2." So there, now you have no excuse.
