Before Rocketcat Games, hook racing wasn't really a genre. But, after two excellent games for the iPhone ("Hook Champ" and "Super Quick Hook"), the concept of swinging your way to the finish line has been solidified. The developer's third game, "Hook Worlds," is the culmination of the concept, and it blends multiple hook racing styles together to create what feels like a best-of collection.
"Hook Worlds" is broken up into three separate, never-ending levels. Each of the levels has a different theme, telling the story of a jungle explorer or a futuristic gnome, for example. Along with graphical changes for each level, new gameplay elements are introduced. The explorer has rocket boots as a special ability, whereas the gnome can flip gravity using futuristic gnome rainbow technology. Seriously, it's a thing.

The ancient martial art of kung fu has captured the minds and hearts of Americans since the mid 1980s when "Karate Kid" stirred up interest in the martial art. While it hasn't reached that popularity level in decades, there's still a desire watch folks putting foot to face. Virtual Air Guitar Company has just released "Kung Fu Live," the most unique kung fu experience to grace a game console since you kicked those weird snakes and little people in its face.

Smurf farming got a lot easier for iPad and iPhone users who discovered how to use a glitch in the game's dependence on local time settings to power level their operations in "Smurfs' Village." Developer and thatgamecompany co-founder and creative director Jenova Chen attracted attention last week after he exploited that quirk and did an interview with Kotaku about his motivations. Those of us who got curious about the unsavory strategy and applied it our own farms were greeted to a disapproving message from Papa Smurf over the weekend, however, and according to The Bearded One, Smurfs noticing your clock manipulation after a recent update may choose to abandon your fields.

The holiday season is supposed to be a time for giving and doing nice things for others, and that's exactly what Wolfire Games set out to accomplish the first time they assembled a Humble Indie Bundle. The game roster consists of "Braid," "Cortex Command," "Machinarium," "Osmos" and "Revenge of the Titans" this time around, and the same decide-what-you-pay system of sliding bars will determine both how much money you pay and how much goes to the developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play.

While I enjoy achievements, trophies, awards, whatever you want to call them, I'm more likely to strive for completion in a few good games than try to boost my score with many painful ones. Take, for example, "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood," a great game which encourages overall completion but doesn't demand it. If you're looking to complete the story, you could finish the game with just a third of the game's achievements unlocked. The remaining achievements can be attained through perseverance, chasing down side missions, collecting flags or searching for feathers. It's the collection of those flags and feathers that I want to discuss, because it's handled exactly how it should be handled by games of this type.

The $29.99 Dreamcast collection listed for a February 14 release date by GameStop in November wasn't just a figment of the retailer's imagination. Though the price, release date and games included in the bundle haven't been made official yet, Sega has confirmed that they do have such a product in the works.

"Minecraft" became an international indie game darling this year, and if you got in on it during its alpha phase, you may have been offered a sweet deal wherein all future versions of the title would be made available to you for free. Mojang Specification is still just getting started, though, and the company's founder Markus Persson intends to move things along to the next level before the end of the year by taking "Minecraft" into beta on December 20.

If there's anyone in the video game industry that deserves a blowout birthday celebration it's Nintendo's most recognizable face, Mario. This year the world-famous plumber is celebrating his 25th birthday, and Nintendo is honoring him with parties, limited edition releases of the Wii and DSi XL, and a special re-release of the Super Nintendo classic "Super Mario All-Stars" for the Wii. The world got a look at some desert landscapes and quick in-game clips from "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception" over the weekend, but only Jimmy Fallon got the privilege of actually picking up a controller. The Naughty Dog crew brought a burning château level onto his show, and though Fallon didn't seem to be very nimble with the controls despite his familiarity with "Uncharted 2," he did give it a go and fall through a collapsing wooden floor while cracking the kind of jokes you will only hear on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."

When I learned of the first details surrounding the multiplayer mode in "Dead Space 2," I was struck with the feeling that it all sounded very familiar. Four versus four battles of humans versus mutated creatures, where the creatures have special abilities and can pick their spawn points, allowing them to get the jump on the normals. Frankly, it sounded a lot like "Left 4 Dead." The other night, EA hosted a small multiplayer session for the game in New York, and my take-away impressions were that this isn't just a knock-off. This is truly "Dead Space" multiplayer.
