Mac App Store

Apple teased its upcoming App Store plans for Mac computers back in October. The new wing of their service that already sells and distributes apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad will bring a simplified one-stop online store to MacBook and iMac users and could be an interesting place to watch for games as well.

Hook Worlds

Since "Bionic Commando," gamers have been fascinated with grappling hooks. But no developer has adopted the grappling hook more than Rocketcat Games, which has just released "Hook Worlds," their third hook-swinging iPhone game in the last two years. But is Rocketcat just treading in the same waters, or does "Worlds" manage to swing on its own?

THE BASICS

"Hook Worlds" is similar to games like "Canabalt" in that it features never-ending gameplay with just one objective: Survive for as long as you can. But while "Canabalt" features just one futuristic setting and gameplay style, "Hook Worlds" comes with three unique levels, each with its own playable character and unique twists. A final, bonus level is available to early adopters (but will be added for all in a later update).

Deus Ex Human Revolution delay

You're going to have to wait a little longer than you expected to get your paws on one of those "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" Augmented Editions, and that goes for any other packaging options that become available as well, since Square Enix has officially pushed the game's launch out of March 2011 and into their next fiscal year with a new date to be determined.

Despite the numerous launch bugs, "Fallout: New Vegas" was a great game. Better than "Fallout 3," even. So good that I dropped a good 80 hours nabbing all of the game's achievements. The prospect of more Fallout, especially at a time when new game releases have slowed to a crawl, makes me all a-quiver, and with only a week until the release of "Dead Money" DLC, we haven't long to wait.

Epic Mickey soundtrack

If "Epic Mickey" got into your head so deep that you find yourself whistling its tunes during non-gaming hours and remembering fondly your times spent painting across Wasteland, you may be interested to know that the Jim Dooley-composed soundtrack that was used for it will soon be available on a standalone disc or over iTunes. An announcement from Disney Interactive Studios today tagged the 20-track collection for December 21, at which point you'll be able to listen to the Emmy winner's new tunes whenever you wish.

Pac-Man Fever

Long before Captain Lou Albano did "The Mario," Columbia Records put out a recording by a duo called Buckner & Garcia titled "Do the Donkey Kong." The pair also put out a track called "Pac-Man Fever" that broke into the top ten on Billboard's Hot 100 rankings in 1982. Now, almost 30 years later they're returning to the spotlight, thanks to a lot of paperwork and the Rock Band Network.

Mass Effect 2

Looking at the release list at the beginning of 2010, you could surmise that this year was going to be a safe one. "Safe" in the sense that we wouldn't be seeing publishers taking a lot of big risks with new franchises, sticking to the warm, comfortable waters of established franchises.

What you probably wouldn't have guessed was how much effort publishers would put into designing sequels that were head and shoulders above their predecessors. Sure, there were underwhelming cop-outs ("Crackdown 2" and "Fable 3" spring to mind), but there were also classics.

In and among these sequels, a few new and awesome IPs managed to poke their heads in, many of them coming from tiny indie developers.

But you know all about that. After all, you lived it. And so did I. Here were my 10 favorite games of 2010.

TurboGrafx-16 iPhone app

The TurboGrafx-16 may not hold the same cult status that Sega's Dreamcast does, but its game library started sending over titles early on for the Wii's Virtual Console store, and it's still hanging around. Now, the deceased game system is going to try cracking open a new market for the iPhone and other Apple devices. The app itself will be free, and it will come with a complimentary copy of "World Sports Competition," but extra games are going to cost you.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 roster

Capcom put the word out themselves about their deluxe offerings and release date for "Marvel vs. Capcom 3," and their steady trickle of character reveals has been masterfully executed. Nevertheless, a Twitter user named klennox22 has been claiming intimate knowledge of unreleased details over the last week, and he's decided go all WikiLeaks with uncorroborated statements about who's left, how many stages there are and other behind-the-scenes tidbits.
