Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword

Not only is Nintendo's 2011 Zelda series installment "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" not broken; it's apparently over the halfway hump on its road to completion.

Portal 2 release date

Despite being suffering a setback when "Portal 2" was delayed into 2011, Valve has made a lot of friends and found some parters thanks to the sequel. Back at E3, they revealed that the game would be getting Steam support on the PlayStation 3, and now they've revealed that EA parters will be handling distribution for retailers.

Lara Croft

It seems today is a big day for Lara Croft, as the lords of Xbox Live have seen fit to bestow a discount on the XBLA game. "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light" has been knocked down by 50% to an insanely low $7.50 (or 600 MS points), which is a steal for my third favorite downloadable game of the year (behind "Super Meat Boy" and "Limbo").

Kinect PC

Users of Microsoft's Kinect control system have already been able to use the device to interface with their PC's. Doing so just requires a little non-MS-sanctioned hacking. A Korean developer seems to believe that things may be changing, however, and even mentioned expectations that Kinect will soon have its makers' blessing to able to go forth and work with desktop computers.

Tomb Raider

At the beginning of the month, we got our first look at the next Lara Croft adventure. Titled "Tomb Raider," the game is planning to reboot the franchise, telling the origins of Lara as she discovers her fondness for tombs, switches and shooting jungle cats in the face. It seems that for her new "first" adventure, however, Lara won't be alone. Crystal Dynamics, the game's developer, has posted job listings, seeking producers and designers for multiplayer.

Super Meat Boy

I have a fondness for extremely well-made, yet extremely difficult, games. MTV Multiplayer contributor, Chris Plante, recently referred to my sort in an Escapist article as "ludomasochists," or "people who take pleasure and find value in the difficulty of play." That's most certainly me, at least when it comes to 2D platformers. The genre has seen a revival in recent years, thanks in no small part to indie developers like Metanet Studios ("N+") and Team Meat ("Super Meat Boy"). Both games repeatedly punish the player without mercy, and yet they're so well-made that we keep coming back for more.

Activision EA lawsuit

Publicly, things had been rather quiet recently regarding the "unfortunate" Mexican standoff of Infinity Ward-related lawsuits between Activision and the studio's former heads Jason West and Vince Zampella. A new round of accusations has begun, however, with an updated filing that explicitly names Electronic Arts on the list of parties that Activision wants money from when all is said and done. EA, unsurprisingly, does not agree with Activision's assessment of how things went down.

DC Universe Online

"DC Universe Online" got hit with a push into 2011 after originally being tagged to be out in time for the 2010 holiday season. Conveniently enough, it did not get pushed too far, and we can now expect to see Sony Online Entertainment release the superpowered MMO on January 11 in the U.S. and January 14 in the U.K.

Gran Turismo 5

All of those "Gran Turismo 5" delays eventually did lead up to a release this year, but Sony waited a few weeks to integrate some new features via a hefty update. Available now, the new batch of tweaks and additions will kick off Round 1 of the game's "GT Academy" competition and deliver some seasonal events and new rewards to your gameplay experience.
