RDR DLC disc

"NBA Jam" isn't the only game wedging its way into a headline this week with news of a disc-based release. Rockstar's "Red Dead Redemption" promotion machine has mostly been focused on the game's Undead Nightmare DLC that comes out on October 26. They stuffed a piece of news in at the bottom of a recent post, however, stating that the pack of content will be released on a disc, as well as digitally, along with a collection of other "RDR" treats.

New Phantasy Star

The Phantasy Star series hasn't exactly been dormant at Sega recently. They recently launched a site for "Phantasy Star Online 2," and "Phantasy Star Portable" came out this year. At least two more games seem to be in the works behind the scenes, though, as Sega has applied for trademarks covering both "Phantasy Star: Eternal Planets" and "Phantasy Star: Eternal Hunters."

Harry Potter
By Kristen Shalbinski

The video game tie-in for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1" is scheduled to launch three days before the movie. There's probably more excitement surrounding this release than previous "Harry Potter" games, thanks to its new genre: third-person shooter (or in this case third-person dueler).

So what scenes from the book are we most looking forward to playing? Here are three promising picks.

Valve Steam trade-ins

Valve made a big stride in its Steam distribution platform's evolution this year by making it available for Mac and sending games like "Portal" and "Half-Life 2" along for the ride. Don't expect their next move with Steam to involve a digital trade-in initiative though. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter claimed that Valve would "supposedly" be implementing such a program soon, but the official word from Valve is that that's just not the case.

Marvel vs Capcom 3

"Marvel vs. Capcom 3" is a much more accessible game than, say "Street Fighter 4." Almost all of the special moves can be pulled off with quarter-circle punch or kick and super combos don't require nearly as much dexterity. But, for non-fighting game fans, "MvC 3" is still a bit of a challenge, as button mashers will quickly lose to more skilled players. In an effort to level the playing field, Capcom has introduced Simple mode.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned cancelled

Disney had some Fable-scale aspirations at one point for its action/RPG Jack Sparrow-verse game "Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned." Alas, the game has set sail for Davy Jones's Locker instead of store shelves now, as layoffs over at Propaganda Games have forced the project into cancellation."

Angry Birds

The "Angry Birds" team found a way to charge iPhone-owning gamers more money with their micro-transaction-toting Mighty Eagle in September. They're giving games away on Android devices now, however. The game's full Android release crashed RovioMobile's website and the site belonging to the Android edition's distributor GetJar.com, according to messages currently posted, which would be understandable given the title's success on other platforms.

MineCraft

Developer Pop Quiz is a weekly interview series in which we ask developers from around the industry the same 10 questions and post their responses.

"Minecraft." If you frequent gaming news sites, you've likely heard the name bandied about. You may have even seen screenshots, like the one above. It's not an easy game to convey, and it's not the most user-friendly game for newcomers, but it's one of the most innovative games I've played all year. If you're looking for a primer on what "Minecraft" is about, watch this "Inception"-style trailer, and then watch this video of a dude accidentally burning his house down in the game. That should give you a good idea about the magic of "Minecaft."

Perhaps more interesting is that such an innovative game was dreamed up by one individual, Markus Persson (or "Notch," as he's known). He started developing the game just over a year ago, and since its release it's had 1,317,860 registered users, over 400,000 of whom have paid for the game. In other words, it's a massive success. And with that, here's Markus:

Dragon Age 2 BioWare Signature Edition

Back in August, BioWare presented the world with trailer and a March 2011 release dates for "Dragon Age 2," and this week they decided to start prodding you for your pre-orders. Luckily for those who planned on purchasing the sequel, that prodding didn't come with any extra costs; instead, the company has announced that pre-orders received by January 11 will be upgraded to a BioWare Signature Edition package that comes with an extra playable character, new missions, a digital copy of the "DA2" soundtrack and a special in-game armory with additional items.

Duke Nukem 3D

Occasionally fans of a video game franchise will come together in their love of said franchise to create some sort of digital ode. This often comes in the form of a remake of a classic game, or an expanded universe-style spin-off. When this happens, one of two things usually happens. First option, the franchise owner discovers the project (usually after some sort of grassroots support from game news sites like this one) and immediately sends the lawyers in to shut it down. The first option is that the franchise simply ignores the project's existence, so long as there's no threat to an upcoming project.
