Bungie Resets 'Halo: Reach' Credits For Chronic Cheaters

Posted 10/4/10 11:29 am EST by Brian Warmoth in News, Xbox 360

Halo Reach cheaters

"StarCraft 2" cheaters aren't the only online gaming troublemakers getting targeted in crackdowns right now. Bungie posted an update Friday night that indicated credit resets and earning bans were being doled out as punishment to "Halo: Reach" players who have been exploiting a glitch that allowed them to pocket thousands of extra credits.

"We are in the process of applying credit resets to approximately 15,000 users who we have identified as the most egregious Challenge Reset abusers," the studio representative wrote on Bungie.net.

A "more comprehensive pass" will be coming later this week, too, so if you've been artificially inflating your credit stash through ungentlemanly (or ungentlewomanly) means and thought you'd escaped the sweep, don't feel too safe yet. On the other hand, if you've been "playing too much Gruntpocalypse" or simply "using the target locator too much," Bungie clarified that you are not considered a cheater.

"Specifically, we targeted an exploit that allowed players to complete a Challenge 20+ times via [intentional] network manipulation (i.e., disconnects.)," the post explained.

Of course, the thread below the update is filled with those who feel they were wrongfully accused, didn't realize they were committing a bannable offense or think that it was Bungie's fault for allowing them to exploit the glitch. The mods don't sound like they have a whole lot of sympathy for such concerns just now, though.

Do you think Bungie did the right thing in response to the glitch exploiters? Did you get caught up in the ban net? Share your responses with us in the comment section below.
