Update: Joystiq is reporting that "Kingmaker" is "a Europe only digital marketing promotion" with "no U.S. integration," so sorry about that if you got your hopes up in North America.
When was the last time you bought a game that featured the voice of Simon Pegg and a Foursquare-style app that could line your in-game pockets with gold? "Fable 3" will be the first such game that I'm aware of now that Lionhead Studios founder Peter Molyneux has announced "Fable 3: Kingmaker," an iPhone-based competition between players in the real world to seize locations in the name of rebels or royalists with "Fable 3" gold on the line.
"I like this really simple play, I'm really fascinated to see if the rebels win or the royalists win," Molyneux said in a presentation at the Eurogamer Expo, according to a report on GamesIndustry.biz.
The app will be a free, geo-location piece of software that will launch on the iPhone and Android phones this month, another report on VideoGamer.com explains. A Windows Phone 7 release will also happen before the end of the year, with users placing flags at various locations, seeking to dominate a venue and gain gold as a prize.
"I love the idea of you being able to earn gold, i love the idea of possibly having things like treasure hunts for this," Molyneux stated. "It's fantastic."
Android users should be especially pleased to see their OS being recognized out of the gate for this app. It's a shame Microsoft hasn't managed to get their own devices ready to support the app at launch, but it looks like information will be available on Fable3Kingmaker.com as things proceed.
