If you're getting a late start on Nintendo's latest "Metroid" release, "Metroid: Other M," you should definitely be wary of an issue which has the potential to wipe out all of your progress and start you from square one.
Nintendo has acknowledged a glitch which takes place after obtaining the Ice Beam. If players backtrack and defeat the two-legged spiked enemy nearby, instead of proceeding through the nearby door, their save game will officially be FUBAR. And, because Nintendo doesn't do software updates for individual titles, it won't be fixed anytime soon.
There is an alternative, though. Nintendo is offering to repair any glitched save games, free of charge. Now for the hitch: You have to mail your save game all the way to Japan. Specifically:
Nintendo Service Center "Metroid Other M" Dept
56 Kaguraden Ogura-cho
Uji, Kyoto 611-0042
Yep, that's Japan alright.
It's a pretty ugly solution for a company that is normally so rock solid when it comes to releasing bug-free or bug-minimal games.
Unfortunately this is once again a situation in which Nintendo is behind the curve when it comes to online functionality. A similar situation on Xbox 360 or PS3 could be remedied with a patch within a week or two. Of course, the flip side of that is that Nintendo works extra hard to release games without those sorts of bugs, whereas some developers can fall back on the day-one patch solution on other platforms.
Whatever the case, it's bad news for fans of "Other M," who should take care when discovering the Ice Beam. No word on a solution from Nintendo of America regarding busted saves, but hopefully there will be an option to send in saves state-side, as well.
