Left 4 Dead 2 DLC

Valve will be keeping a lot of options open for players who dive into their new "Sacrifice" DLC for "Left 4 Dead" and "Left For Dead 2." The story, which will be previewed in an upcoming digital comic this September, leaves room for alternate paths to be taken and explains how the team from the first game lost one of its members. The four-part comic covering the characters' backstories, meanwhile, will be drawn by Brian Michael Bendis' "Powers" collaborator, artist Mike Oeming.

Mafia 2

When the original "Mafia" came out 2002, it set new standards for storytelling in games. It told the complex, tragic story of Tommy Angelo, a taxi driver turned mafia capo who rose to power in the 1930s. Convincing voice acting, a Hollywood-level script and memorable missions set "Mafia" apart from the crowd and made it one of the best PC games ever made. It makes sense that 2K Games would take its time with the sequel, and after eight years (and a few mediocre console ports), "Mafia 2" is finally here. And while it does match some of the high standards set by the first game, it never manages to achieve greatness.

Mafia II

"Mafia 2" is out this week, but if you're still on the fence about playing another mob inspired game, maybe you just need to get in the right mood. I recently had the chance to ask 2K Czech's game producer, Alex Cox, about what movies and television shows he recommends gamers watch to help prepare themselves to step into the shoes of "legitimate businessman" and WWII veteran, Vito Scaletta. Here are Cox's picks for five of the best stories to watch to get you in that skull-cracking state of mind just in time for "Mafia 2."

CheapyD

While "Saints Row 3" may spill over into a real-world movie, a little bit of the real world has just made its way into "Saints Row 3." Cheap Ass Gamer proprietor and Saints Row franchise lover CheapyD won an auction help out the family of fire victim Ashley Ames and his $1,725 bid was good enough to get him rendered and cast as a character in Volition's upcoming sequel.

The games industry is full of unsung heroes, the people that actually make the games that we play. Hidden behind all the hype and marketing are dedicated gamers who love their craft and want to make the best games possible. In our first weekly look at those people, we spoke to Zombie Interactive's Lead Designer, Jared Gerritzen (who most recently worked on "Blacklight: Tango Down") to get his story on how he got started, where the industry is headed, and his undying love for Valve.

Super Street Fighter 4 arcade

The "Super Street Fighter 4" arcade machine looked as though it might be getting a new challenger or two last month, and far from denying such plans, Capcom seems to have encouraged speculation and in doing so confirmed that at least one new face is on its way.

Shank

Even though Microsoft's Summer of Arcade initiative came to a close with the excellent "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light" earlier this week, that doesn't mean we're in for dull days on the downloadable front. Next week will see the release of "Shank," a side-scrolling action game that may feature the best 2D animation I've ever seen. And unlike all the Summer of Arcade titles, "Shank" is arriving on both PSN and XBLA.
