Halo Reach

One of the things that made the "Halo: Combat Evolved" campaign so memorable was variety. Think back to the first three missions in the game. You start with the assault on the Pillar of Autumn, followed by the wide open, sandbox-style mission of "Halo," and then book-ended with the stealthy, nighttime sniper mission, "The Truth And Reconciliation." It's hard not to think back to that third mission when one plays "Nightfall," a mission in "Halo: Reach" which takes place at night and starts you off with a sniper rifle, assaulting Covenant bases set along a cliff side.

Metroid Other M

When it comes to games with a legacy, few are as long-lived or as beloved as "Metroid." The Nintendo classic follows the yellow-and-red-armored star-hopping bounty hunter Samus Aran and her repeated run-ins with the titular race of life-absorbing creatures. Her latest adventure, "Metroid: Other M," is at once a dramatic departure from what's come before and a loving tribute to everything the series has been. There are a few definite stumbles, some easier to overlook than others, but one thing becomes abundantly clear after playing through the game: This is an undeniably faithful "Metroid" experience.

Liars and Cheats

Now that Rockstar's dark angel of bans has passed over its "Red Dead Redemption" community, they're ready to start giving rather than taking away once again. The "Liars and Cheats" DLC pack was previously announced with a few details, but Rockstar has marked it for a September 21 launch and elaborated a bit on what the new offering will include.

Kinect players

If a Kinect game doesn't support sitting on your couch, Microsoft wants the blame placed squarely on the developer, not the hardware, and a company rep has now gone on the record repeating the same position on a two-player glass ceiling.

And Yet It Moves

Developer Pop Quiz is a weekly interview series in which we ask developers from around the industry the same 10 questions and post their responses.

Having something you worked selected as part of the IGF student showcase is a resounding feat, but turning that game into one of the most anticipated WiiWare games of the year is an accomplishment on a whole different level. It is, however, something that Felix Bohatsch can say that he has done with this week's WiiWare release, "And Yet It Moves." Originally part of his Bachelor at University of Technology in Vienna the physics based platformer is his first venture into the games industry, but that doesn't mean Bohatsch isn't seasoned enough to offer up his insightful observations on gaming in this week's Developer Pop Quiz.

Best Buy

Despite a few bumps in the road for used games at retail chains and expanding efforts by publishers like EA and THQ limit the amount of game content available secondhand owners, Best Buy and Target have announced new initiatives to facilitate trade-ins. Both stores revealed methods for incentivizing game trade-ins, but they'll be taking slightly different approaches.

Reverb

UPDATE: In an effort to discover how the FTC was able to uncover Reverb's illicit App Store reviews, I spoke with Stacey Ferguson, a Staff Attorney at the FTC in the division of Advertising Practices in the Bureau of Consumer Protection. Ferguson worked on the Reverb case and while she wasn't able to go into specifics, she did mention that the FTC "got reports from press that Reverb was involved in these fake postings and we decided to look into it some more, so we opened an investigation."

Once the investigation began, Ferguson explained that the FTC "reviewed internal Reverb materials and documents, so we were able to determine that part of [Reverb's] marketing campaign was to post these fake reviews on behalf of their client."

In closing, Ferguson gave some suggestions for ways companies can avoid running into the same issues:

"I would just encourage companies to make sure that their advertising agencies and PR firms are aware of the FTC act and are making the proper disclosures. Companies should understand that the goal should be consumer understanding and transparency. And consumers might want to take online postings with a grain of salt, because you never know who is actually making the posting."

UPDATE 2: Just received Reverb's official statement on the matter, which you can read right here:

During discussions with the FTC, it became apparent that we would never agree on the facts of the situation. Rather than continuing to spend time and money arguing, and laying off employees to fight what we believed was a frivolous matter, we settled this case and ended the discussion because as the FTC states: "The consent agreement is for settlement purposes only and does not constitute admission by the respondents of a law violation."

ORIGINAL STORY: The Federal Trade Commission has settled charges with Reverb Communications which state that the PR company had its employees post positive reviews of iPhone games in the App Store without disclosing that they were employed by the game's developer or that they received a portion of the game's profits.

DJ Hero 2 track list

All of that "DJ Hero 2" chatter about DJ Qbert, David Guetta, DJ Shadow and RZA turned out to be based on facts, as Activision has released the names of 105 tracks from the new game, and they all appear on it. So do 2Pac, 50 Cent, Justice, Eminem, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and lots of other artists you should recognize. You can peruse the whole rundown after the jump.

In the past two days I spent about 12 hours playing "Halo: Reach," and while I can't discuss most of what I saw due to embargo restrictions, I was able to get Joseph Tung, the game's executive producer, to talk about some of the insane armor unlocks in the game.

As he says in the above video, you can customize different pieces of your SPARTAN armor. The options are much more varied than what was in the "Halo: Reach" beta, allowing players to customize helmets, shoulder pads, chest pieces, knee pads, wrist accessories, sidearm accessories and even the color of your visor. Those are the sorts of things most people will be customizing.
