Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

I'll fully admit that I did not see this coming. When I first learned that Crystal Dynamics was working on a downloadable Lara Croft game, I wrote it off as a simple cash-in while the developer worked on the next full-fledged Tomb Raider sequel. As it turns out, "Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light" is the best Lara Croft game in recent memory and manages to revive a franchise which has struggled in recent years.

Doom 4

QuakeCon brought news that id Software's "Rage" would see a release for iPhone ahead of its PC and console launches, but two of id's best known properties stuck around in the shadows for the show. Wolfenstein will likely spend some time in the workshop before a new sequel emerges, but "Doom 4" is actively in development, and it should show up at retail in the same places that "Rage" does. Asked if simultaneous releases for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 would be part of the plan for the game, id CEO Todd Hollenshead acknowledged that that's what he would like to see.

GoldenEye

The "GoldenEye 007" reboot for Wii, "DJ Hero 2" and "Call of Duty: Black Ops" all showed on Activision's newly-refreshed slate for Q4 2010, and knowing what will be out by the holidays should be helpful for anyone assigning calendar slots to their end-of-the-year purchases.

Activision confirmed "GoldenEye," "Tony Hawk: Shred" and "DJ Hero 2" for Q4, with their second Bond title "James Bond 007: Blood Stone" now tagged for Winter 2010, according to a report on CVG. Their launch lineup will also include "Call of Duty: Black Ops" on November 9.

Flight Control HD

A game like "Flight Control" could never really work with a traditional console controller. It's basically an RTS, but there's no one to fight. Imagine if your only objective in "StarCraft 2" was to make sure your space marines didn't bump into each other as they marched around your base. That's "Flight Control," and it'd be a nightmare with an analog stick. With the Move controller, though...now that's interesting. "Flight Control HD" is coming to PSN on September 15 and will include support for Sony's motion controller.

Red Faction Battlegrounds

A THQ domain name buy prompted speculation about what "Red Faction: Battlegrounds" might be last week, but a Monday morning program at GDC Europe this week pulled back a few of the curtains and confirmed that the title will be a downloadable Xbox Live and PlayStation Network release that will support "Red Faction: Armageddon."

Fallout: New Vegas

Until recently, I had seen "Fallout: New Vegas" on a leash. One of the developers would plop me down in a region of the map and let me explore that area, but the moment I started to venture, I was stopped. It's painful to see a "Fallout" game that way, as the franchise is so focused around exploration and discovery. Thankfully the latest press event for the game was the open, unguided experience I was hoping for. After starting the game and watching the standard "Fallout" intro, I was told to go wherever I wanted in the Nevada wastes.

Like "Fallout 3," much of the map in "Fallout: New Vegas" is inspired by real places. And although you can't play the game until October, you can visit these places with the magic of Google Maps!

Knights of the Crystals

If you have a big hole in your life that you were hoping to fill with a portable "Final Fantasy"-style social game, Square Enix may have just the non-FF-branded game on its way to your PC and mobile devices in the near futures. "Knights of the Crystals" is a new social RPG available for the "GREE" system in Japan, but it's going to be coming to the rest of the world at some point down the line.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2 Yoda

Yoda sure does love sending lost young Force users into his little tree-cave. Starkiller shows up to Degobah in the latest trailer from "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2," and anyone who's seen "The Empire Strikes Back" should be able to recognize what the most famous little green Jedi master in the galaxy is up to when he sends him on his way through the root-hole. Fallout: New Vegas

Ever since the original "Fallout," way back in 1997, Ron Perlman has provided an eerie, stage-setting monologue to open the game. Ron Perlman was, is and forever will be the "Fallout" narrator, and "Fallout: New Vegas" is no different.

At a recent press event, Bethesda allowed me to play through the game right from the very beginning, including the opening cutscene and Perlman's latest monologue. As usual, it gave me chills, and deserves to be enjoyed by all, so I'm posting the audio here. In the game, the narration is accompanied by stills showing the events he describes, but you can probably use your imagination on that front.
