"Final Fantasy XIV" with all of its lush landscapes and customizable features will appear first on the PC before coming to the PlayStation 3, Square Enix has acknowledged. The MMO is currently expected in stores this September for PC, but won't be available in stores until March 2011 for Sony's console, and the company is blaming "memory" problems for the six-month gap.
"The main reason was the memory," the game's producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 via his translator at GamesCom. "On the PC, they have enormous memory. For PS3, there’s a restriction."
Whether he was referring to RAM issues that would slow down speeds in-game or HDD-oriented issues, Tanaka said that his team is working on the problem and he hopes to keep the wait on PS3's down to a minimum.
"They are adjusting the memory size and customising it; it took longer then we were expecting," he explained. "But we’re really working hard to bring it out as soon as possible.”
The list of console-based MMO's isn't that large right now, and the rundown in 2011 for the Xbox 360 is one title short, thanks to "FFXIV" abandoning the platform entirely as of right now. If you saw "Final Fantasy XIII" on a 360 and PS3 in side-by-side demos, though, you'll know that this one is going to look better on Sony's system anyhow.
Are you surprised about the difficulties that Square Enix has been having behind the scenes with "FFXIV"? Do you plan on picking it up for PC instead of the PS3? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
