Competing Against Halo Games Could Feel 'Strange' For Bungie

Posted 8/2/10 1:59 pm EST by Brian Warmoth in News, Xbox 360

Halo Reach

Every day between now and the "Halo: Reach" release on September 14 brings Bungie a little closer to their post-Halo era (aside from continuing to support "Reach," of course). As they move on to focusing on their new project with Activision, they face the very real likelihood that they'll be competing against the franchise they created. Don't worry, though, it's not keeping them up at night.

"I think it'll feel maybe a little strange," Bungie community director Brian Jarrard told CVG. "I guess weird's a good word — it's not something we're probably going to lose sleep over or spend a lot of time worrying about."

Jarrard said that he would be flattered to see Halo continue to succeed as a property, but he and his crew will be looking to re-create the same kind of success story they had with Microsoft while working with Activision.

"We're really confident about the ideas we're already working on for our next project and we're going to be doing things that will hopefully help shape the next ten years of gaming," he explained. "We've got most of the people who helped us do this before back at the helm to do it again."

"Halo" was "Halo," just like "Super Marios Bros." was "Super Mario Bros." for the history of video games, so it's tough to imagine what Bungie will do to accomplish that goal. Then again, if anyone else could have envisioned "Halo" before Bungie did, they wouldn't have been making the games they've made over the last decade.

What kind of game would you like to see Bungie make next? Do you think they'll be able to make a game on par with "Halo"? Share your predictions in the comment section below.
