Things looked bleak for the "Gears of War" movie back in April when director Len Wiseman decided he wanted to focus on "Nocturne" and the film's script and budget reportedly got sent to the cutting room. Things haven't necessarily improved as far as all of that goes, but Epic Games design director Cliff Blesinski offered an update at Comic-Con International in San Diego and offered some insight into where things got off track.
Bleszinski said that a new script is being conceived that will cost less to produce that Wiseman's $100 million project, according to a report on Cinema Blend. An R rating and no love story evidently made Wiseman's film difficult to sell to Hollywood, so the new strategy will involve creating something "more like 'District 9'" and less like "2012."
"District 9" was a fine film. I don't know that I get the same vibe from it that I do from playing a "Gears" game when it comes to scale and scenery, but maybe it will be possible to translate "Gears" into a movie without building-sized beast aliens and guns the size of motorcycles. Or, who knows? Maybe someone will find everything at a garage sale someone, and none of that will be an issue.
Do you think it will be possible to do a "Gears of War" film on a "District 9"-sized budget? What you make of Bleszinki's outlook? Share your reactions in the comment section below.
