Both of the domain named-related "Red Faction" mysteries appear to be solved now that "Red Faction: Armageddon" has been dated and THQ and SyFy are using "Red Faction: Origins" as a "working title" for their new TV movie and potential "Battlestar Galactica"-style backdoor pilot. The two-hour production has a March 2011 premiere planned, along with some newly-publicized story details.
"THQ is blazing a new trail in the gaming industry with our partnership with Syfy by introducing the Red Faction franchise to a new and broader audience," THQ core games executive vice president Danny Bilson said in a press release. "This unique transmedia collaboration is one of many strategic initiatives in place to dramatically increase awareness for Red Faction Armageddon and extend the Red Faction brand across a wide variety of entertainment channels."
"Vampire Diaries" and "Boston Legal" writer Andrew Kreisberg wrote the script for the film, based on a concept from THQ fiction development director Paul DeMeo. The tale "follows the lineage of rebel hero Alec Mason and the Mason family, set during a period" that takes place between "Red Faction: Guerrilla" and "Red Faction: Armageddon," according to the announcement, which doesn't outrightly state that the TV movie will be in continuity with the games, but it seems to imply that those who have played "Guerrilla" may have a reasonable idea of what's going on.
I like the idea of keeping the story consistent and using the movie to expand on what's already there, rather than retelling it, but the title hasn't even been finalized yet, so we'll just have to wait to get that clarified.
