Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

If you watched the live Nintendo media briefing from E3 2010, you experienced Nintendo's worst nightmare. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of "Mario" and "Zelda," was up on stage demonstrating the much-anticipated "Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword," a new installment for the franchise coming to Wii in 2011. Despite the focus of the game being on fluid sword controls thanks to Wii Motion Plus, the system wasn't cooperating, with Link's sword simply not following the movements of Miyamoto. Wireless issues from all the network cards in the crowd? Seems so, as I had the chance to play "Skyward Sword" after the presentation and it worked exactly as advertised.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood

When we first learned that "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" would have multiplayer, there was some concern that the mode would be tacked on to justify another $60 purchase. Having played a handful of adversarial matches, however, it's obvious that the mode fits in with the rest of the franchise extremely well.

Saints Row movie

THQ said that Saints Row info at E3 this year would blow our minds, and the biggest news thus far seems to be that THQ believes they have a "major filmmaker" on board to get a movie out to coincide with the launch of "Saints Row 3."

"We will have a movie with a major filmmaker that will be tied to our content and we will be ideally day-and-date with that movie," THQ core games VP Danny Bilson said at E3, according to CVG.

"Monkey Island 2: Special Edition" is looking fantastic. If the franchise's first special edition was an update to a beloved classic, LucasArts' second outing is an amazing piece of fan service. It's clear, based on the new features, that the development team has listened closely to player feedback.

APB

"APB," the brainchild of "Grand Theft Auto" & "Crackdown" creator David Jones, is not your average MMO. Set in modern times, the persistent online world plays much more like an action title with players battling it out as members of either the Enforcer or Criminal factions (think cops and robbers grown up). Enforcers are encouraged to obey traffic, protect civilians, and arrest (or kill) the bad guys with as little collateral as possible. And Criminals… well, think the opposite.

Even though this is a persistent online world where players do create and personalize their character, "APB" shares more in common with games like "COD: Modern Warfare" than "World of Warcraft. And "APB" lead designer, EJ Moreland, is quick to point out that it's not going to be hours of grinding that'll take you far in the game.

Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo pulled away the curtains from its portable 3DS platform at E3 today, and in addition to announcing support for 3-D movies and a long lineup of third-party developers, they also began rolling out names of classic in-house franchises coming to the device. "Kid Icarus," "StarFox" and "PilotWings" will all be among them.

Portal 2

Ever since the dawn of "Portal," the prospect of that gameplay with a second person is just slightly mind-bending. It seems the reality is just as mind-bending, as I attempted to survive a handful of "Portal 2" co-op test chambers with Valve's Erik Wolpaw.

Co-op features a completely different story and set of challenges from the single-player game. When teaming up, you'll control one of two robots...one made from an old GladOS personality sphere and another made from a broken-down turret. Your character doesn't affect your abilities, though, as both robots act exactly like the hero did in the original game.

Steven Spielberg Playing PlayStation Move

World-renowned film director, Steven Spielberg, is a known gamer and comes to just about every E3 to check out what the gaming industry has to offer. This year was no different. During my booth tour of Sony PlayStation, I spotted the director trying his hand at PlayStation Move ("Sports Champions" being his game of choice), and snapped the shot above on my unfortunately crummy iPhone camera.

It does bring to mind another one of Spielberg's trips to the LA Convention center. Remember this classic shot?

Yakuza 4

For people in the west, Sega's "Yakuza" series has long been more than just a surprisingly deep brawler set within Japan's mafia scene. No, most people here in the states treat the game as a virtual tour of everyday Japanese life. It was no wonder that early western fans of the series cried out against the original's lack of a Japanese audio track, or last year's release of "Yakuza 3" that was largely stripped of key elements like Hostess Bars, that are so unique to Japan (not to mention something that even Westerners in Japan are often denied permission to enter).

Well this year Japan-o-philes, you have very little to worry about. After speaking with Patrick Riley, localization's Senior Producer for "Yakuza 4," he assured me that very little of the content seen in Japan will be omitted from its release stateside.

Portal 2

Valve founder Gabe Newell has a lot of opinions about the game industry, and he doesn't always have the best things to say about consoles. He has signed on to bring "Portal 2" to the PlayStation 3, however, on the same day that it launches for the Xbox 360 and PC.

"I've been pretty outspoken in my comments about the current generation of game consoles, so I'd really like to thank everyone at Sony for their gracious hospitality and for not repeatedly punching me in the face," Newell said when he arrived on Sony's stage at their E3 keynote Tuesday. "As an industry we're going through a transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, and because of that the needs of game players and game developers are evolving."
